Shetland and the Scottish Parliament

Maybe!. The air discount scheme, a Scotland wide bus pass for pensioners or the disabled and the 2 free ferry crossings a year to the mainland again for the pensioners and disabled are unlikely to have happened (or would not have happened so quickly) from a Westminster government.

And an electoral system that gives some representation to smaller political groups such as the Greens or the Scottish Socialists is great. Maybe one day it will spread to Westminster.

The only good I've seen come out of the Scottish Parliament has either only made a significant difference to very small numbers of people, or has had an almost minimal benefit to the overall population. Considering the tax dollars expended to simply allow it to exist, against the value of it's overall productivity, I feel my worst fears pre-establisment that it would end up being a high maintenance toothless talking shop, have been fully realised.

Like most right-minded people, my initial reaction is to say the Scottish Parliament has been a complete waste of money. Wee Jack comes across as a cringe inducing gnome, Cathy Jamieson looks uncomfortable out of her shell-suit, and Nicola Sturgeon is about as likeable as Jeremy Beadle.

I think that it's only fair that since we had a vote to start the Parliament we should be allowed to have another vote to disband it. That would be real democracy in action! Then each citizen in Scotland could be given a share in the building and get a dividend as it's sold off as luxury flats!

However when I take time to think about it I have to applaud the Scottish Parliament for the smoking ban.
