First Motorbike

In response to the 4 wheeled monster who started the First Car thread, I thought this might be of interest. Especially to Ghostrider, who used to race round the Ness on 2 wheels.

Anyway, my first motorbike was a 1956 BSA Bantam D3. Registration PS2629.

She had been rebuilt by a Ness Man, and she was brilliant. Top Speed down hill in 3rd (top) gear was 55mph, if the wind was behind me.

But that bike was a classic. I did 21,000 miles with it in 18 months, and although I had several more motorbikes before I needed a car for girlfriend comfort, I still think fondly of that British built heap of metal.

I loved that bike so much that I could write a book about her, but won't.

So you tell me about your first motorbike. :D

This is the 4 wheeled monster. Had me a Suzuki TS 50 when i was 16. Every one o my pals made fun o it for being slow, but every one o them got lifts on da back o it or had to resort ta lifts fae there mams. Every 16 year old should get a fizzy 50.

Oh dear, I don't know if my first bike really qualifies at a bike. But hey, it was circa 1980, we were young, and definitey had no more sense than we have now.

A 1974 Honda SS50, the four speed flat handlebar model, GSO 760N. I got it aff a guy on Bressay who'd gotten it off a guy in the toon who'd had it from new. 42 mph downhill with a following wind, 45 if it was a gale of wind.

Did the engine up twice, once when I got her, and blew the side out of the piston within 6 months, rebored her and wore out that rebore in months. Younger bridder trying to persuade wheelies and jumps out of her in the park finally killed her.

Kawasaki KE100. I chose it because it was orange ;-) It was, however, no Jota and struggled to get up all hills. Being an unpopular model it was also a nightmare to get used parts for. So, for a replacement I decided to get the most vanilla bogstandard machine around. At that time it was the Honda CB250 Superdream.

My first, which I kept until it succumed to rust and having no chassis was a unsaveable (note the multiple welds on the back forks!)

50cc, but easily outran the strangely sluggish 90's that everybody else seemed to go for. Brilliant bike, apart from the occasion plug gap check and bulb virtually maintenance free.

Next one of note was an MZ150 which I used for my test (bored out 125). I think of it fondly again due to simplicity. 2 stroke (pre mixed) single with a dynamo electrical system.

*off to google to see if MZ still does them*

^^My second bike was an MZ250. Brilliant :D

Edit: There's a story about that, which is rather embarrassing, so, no you ain't going to hear it.

Suffice to say that the handlebars of an MZ250 were wider than that of a BSA Bantam D3...

Think Of a narrow shed door which one could fit through, and the other couldn't, at speed.

Gonads hurt for a while.

+1 on the SS50.

Got a '76 SS50 5 speed when i was 13 from a guy in Skellister, ran it over the hill for 3 years and then rigged it up for the road when i was 16.

Kept it until i was 18 and then sold it to a friend who had it in his shed for years and never got around to doing anything to it. He then sold it to a guy who eventually sold it to my brother and i persuaded him to sell it back to me about 5 years ago.

In the middle of a nut and bolt restoration and hopefully it will be finished for the next classic bike show. It has only taken me 4 years so far but i am getting there.

When i got it back there was no registration documents so i phoned up the DVLC who could tell me that it was still registered in my name. So it has now been registered in my name for nearly 22 years.

GPS 764P is the registration number, i would be interested to know who had it from new, and any of the other 3 previous owners.
