Who benefitted from the demise of Hodges?

He had seen a gap in the market and then proceeded to fill it.

Don't just say that he sometimes sold only crap, as we know he sometimes did.

But that could only happen of course, if people sometimes bought his crap.

So, was the guy treated unfairly when he was actively trading?

Was he treated unfairly after he stopped trading?

Of course he was.

Once again, who benefitted?

Maybe we all lost out?

The only they sold that didn't blow up was fireworks!!

And the Muggles in the town hall have been confused about it ever since

In the Shetland Times article, Chris Hodge states that it was the SIC that bankrupted him.

Is he correct in stating this?

How could the SIC be responsible for that icepick239 , they can't even do a simple job like get there loan money back.

And Bankruptcy takes more brains to sort out, and there has been none of that over the past 6 months in certain high profile departments of the SIC

^^ A matter of opinion some will say, but as I understood it (without searching back through the news stories) he invested a lot of money, which was clear, in the building and then the council did a u-turn on various planning permissions.

I also understand it was at that time he stopped paying rent to the Millers as the building was no longer suitable for his use.

That is, of course, grossly over simplified and there were countless twists and turns, but I believe it to be the basic understory.

Thank you icepick for starting this thread. I've enjoyed every second of it. Wouldn't this make a great panto? Not just two, but three, even four ugly sisters? Can you guess who they are?

Some of you have slagged off Hodgie. What if he just carried on the Judane tradition by selling bruck? Some of their knitwear was crap.

yes there were moans its what you get for dealing in the bottom end of the market. still what was done to him was wrong. it was obvious that the SIC were out to get him when they started queueing up to slap notices on him. lets see they wanted a change of use then the cafe was wrong and needed planning and the car park and then trading standards.

so if he has a case against either the SIC or the millers then he should go after them.

did the millers check the planning rules before renting out the unit. did there lawyers not flag up concerns over it. there maybe an issue to look at. did the millers get consent from the bank and council as they were in debt to both. and i assume both have charges against the building.

The Millers did indeed check planning permission and initially were told that it was ok for Chris Hodge to trade from the factory. Unfortunately the Planning dept changed their mind, hence the dispute with the SIC mentioned when the recent agrrement was reached.

http://www.shetland-news.co.uk/archives/2005/09_2005/hodge%E2%80%99s_warehouse_to_stay_open.htm

Earlier this month, Mr Hodge started trading from premises at the outskirts of Lerwick after planning officials initially told him he did not require planning permission to convert the former Judane knitwear factory into a large warehouse.

Judane had had a small retail outlet within its factory over the last ten years and planning officials had told Mr Hodge in writing that converting the building into a warehouse would not change the use of the premises.

However, in summer, the SIC’s planning department changed its mind and told Mr Hodge that he had to apply for planning permission.
