Noodeyn
I think the sic need a kick up the behind for the state of lerwicks town illuminations, how long since they were updated and half the time they don't work residents certainly put them to shame!!! There's a nice garden up Anderson road, dat old wife shud get a prize me thinks.
Longdog
Baa Humbug You'll be wanting more electricity for all those un-necessary lights then May be every house with xmas lights should have it's own wind turbine, be interesting to see how many have nice displays then Baa Humbug
Noodeyn
Not at all I'm very festive but would deffo be interested to find ways of making up for the electricity used for better lights maybe switch off every second street light or switch the illuminations off after say 11pm or stuff like that? Malcolm
We had our first Christmas late night opening last night and nearly everyone I spoke to said the lights were "a very poor effort at best" and "why bother if that is their best effort" , one wee wifie offered to "Gang oot n buy lights an a ladder tae fix da bu****s masell". Just how old is the cr (sorry) the Christmas decorations that are up now? Come on SIC, Have some bl***y pride in Shetland!
TeeAyBee
It is hard to know what the right answer would be. The Council haven't updated their lights and they're slagged off for not doing so here on Shetlink. If they update their illuminations, someone will no doubt say that they've wasted money on new lights when the old folk / homeless / whatever needs the cash instead. With due respect to Mattie who in his original post posed a valid question, what is the point in continuing this thread if all that will happen is that SIC will get slated whatever they do? Guest Anonymous
I may be wrong, but I think that most of the lights on Da Street were paid for by the retailers (Town Centre Association, or whatever it's called).
Njugle
Of course, anybody who realy feels that any public illuminations are lacking are entirely free to start a fund raising campaign to pay for better ones, leaving the politics out of it. I'm sure the local authority/retailers would welcome such a donation. Nice idea Mattie, we shouldn't mention any names of course, but given that some of our local private light displays could be seen from outer space there is no harm in mentioning the more prominent of them here. hellsbells
I love the display at the house in Lochside. It might be tacky to some folk but hey the bairns love it. My sis had to take her 6year old to see it the other night and no doubt she'll have to go a few more times before Santa comes.
Spinner72
I thought this thread was gonna be about the new lights da coonty had put up this year! Seems the shoppers have been too busy shopping to notice
ArabiaTerra
The new LED lights are much more energy efficient than traditional bulbs (about 5% of the electricity), but they are more expensive. OTOH, they last much longer too.
Ghostrider
Switch them all off! Things get to be more fun in the dark.

PJ of Hildisvik
The festive decorations of Lerwick are pathetic. The lights on the trees are very good though, but Lerwick is without doubt probably the most drab Xmas expierence for kids anywhere
