I take your point turrifield, but I was just trying to address the good old "we couldn't survive financially without England" myth that JAS has obviously fallen for. Ally Posted April 29, 2006 Report Share Posted April 29, 2006 Liverpool & Newcastle are closer physically (& perhaps mentally) to Glasgow & Edinburgh than to London and, on the whole, share a similar feeling of isolation from the Houses of Parliament. In terms of shared socio-economic history, voting trends and gereral world outlook, you could argue that The North of England has far more in common with Scotland than it has with The South - why should we exclude them because of some ancient border? Personally I don't think Scotland could sustain without the help of England and I don't think that independance is any step closer to unity. Sustain what exactly. They are f*cked big style without us and our Celtic cousins. Oil, mining and engineering from the Provinces is what keeps this unity together. The current fiasco with Sakchai Makao illustrates very well why we need to be independent to avoid the SE England immigration policy. On the whole it's not England that's holding us back but the European Union. We certainly couldn't go it alone. The current Scottish Parliament struggles with the powers it's been given just now. You beleive in a system whereby every single penny ever raised in Scotland leaves the country goes to London and comes back in a sort of pocket money style? You beleive that Scotland should always be controlled by London. You beleive that every penny of oil revenue raised in Shetland should leave the country and go to London? What happens when that runs out? I beleive in the people of Scotland, including Shetland, being able to and having the vision to look after Scotland. Stan Posted June 17, 2006 Report Share Posted June 17, 2006 I understand your point guys but: 1) we have nothing in common with the rest of Europe but the home countries have plenty in common with each other. We must keep together. The European Union has countries that are too diverse in history and culture and it is unworkable for all of Europe to be one people. As part of the UK we can lobby our elected representatives to the UK parliament to fight our cause - and if you elect the right people they will. Europe will listen to the UK MP or cabinet minister before they listen to some Hamish McBungle on behalf of some small country on the cold edge of Europe. 2) the Union of GB has been going for quite a few years now and it seems to work - the envy of most of the rest of the world. The folk wanting independence don't seem to realise that as long as we are part of the European Union we will NEVER have independence. Independence is not just about how the money you generate is used. I believe we would lose stability on many fronts. I assume you suggest that we would use the Euro as our currency and be part of the European Union? As I said, so much for independence. Or would we have our own currency? If we did, our money would more than likely be devalued and worthless fairly swiftly. Perhaps a more extreme note, we would be ripe for any dictator type with a craze for power and a wish to abuse it. 'Joke' McConnell as President - are YOU joking, DonaldM? Just my opinion folks. I'll sit and listen and debate with others and will readily see their point of view. I am not one for great change but I am one for Great Britain!
