It was reported on the SN Website, that 5 Councillors and 2 Senior Officials from the SIC have spent a day and a half in a room with 3 Norwegian Tunnel Experts and a UK Tunnel Consultant, Andy Sloan.

The mind boggles

That's a good thing though the Norwegians are the experts on tunnelling. If the SIC is seriously considering a Whalsay tunnel I'd hope they were speaking to experts.

QUESTION: Does Aberdeen make one lose their sense of humour? :)

Sad that in these days of video conferences via internet, the SIC councillors still enjoy shopping trips to the mainland.
I am inclined to think that being in the same room as the "experts" probably gave our delegation a clearer view of what can be done for how much money compared with continuing to provide a ferry service to a similar standard as today. This in turn makes them better qualified to make a decision when the plans come to a vote in the council chamber.

Perhaps they ought to be looking at alternative ferry design as well. Is there an option for a ramp and slipway design that could well reduce future maintenance costs?. And indeed are there any other options.

What the residents of the various islands need to consider is a future when the SIC has spent all the money and the islands are once again served by a single ferry from Lerwick as in the days of the Earl or when each service is operated by a single ferry.

Incidentally does anyone know if the SIC had a duty to provide any inter island links?.

If there is going to be a fundamental change to tunnels, surely you have to look at all the tunnels needed.

Whalsay

Bressay

Yell Sound and Blue Mull sound.

Get a price on doing the lot.

If the tunnel idea is scrapped and new terminals and ferries and the future escalating fuel and running costs have to be met then surely you will have to raise the price of crossings substantionaly to attempt to meet the costs

Whatever the decision huge amounts of money will have to be found.

No more than providing a road, street lighting or pavements in Lerwick I would think.

Ferries. The SIC gets EU funding for each ferry they operate.
