Ghostrider
(***Mod Edit - Merged with existing thread***) An open letter to the people of ShetlandFreedom for the Shetland IslesWritten by Christopher Macdonald In a recent poll on www.shetlink.com 64% of people wanted the Shetland Isles to break away from the UK (either in the form of a Crown Dependency or a fully independent State). This majority wished for an end to the unfair taxation from the UK Government, their claim to the oil and fish in the waters around the islands and most importantly, their right to rule here in the Shetland isles.Sadly the truth is that the way things are going this freedom will remain only a distant wish. There are, however, a growing number of individuals who are campaigning for the Independence of the Shetland Isles. I am one of them and I am looking for help.I have a plan that will help us fight and fund this most important legal battle and one which will deliver substantial revenue streams to the Shetland economy to help sustain Independence. However I need to own a small piece of Shetland land to make this dream a reality. I am not a rich man nor am I currently a landowner and my plan requires that I own a plot of land of about one acre.I must therefore appeal to anyone or any group, anywhere in Shetland, who values Independence and wishes to help, to donate a tiny portion of land to help me fight for the Independence which has been denied to the isles for hundreds of years. If anyone wishes to contact me regarding this request, please email me at cmacdonald1989@aol.com All fine and well, but folk need to know who and what Christopher Macdonald is, and a little more detail of whatever plans he has. We already have one character trying to travel down a similar road, and while some of the issues he's highlighted may be worthy of investigation and pursual, the man and his methods IMHO are highly unlikely to be an asset to the cause in question. Donating anything to anything, be it land, money or time, unless we're talking charity here, is an investment, and an investor needs to know the liklihood of success and level of return on an investment before considering making one. EM
I have a plan ...A cunning plan perhaps? Too cunning to even outline it would seem. But seriously, this really does not come across as being particularly well presented, or competent. It will be interesting to see how the "we could be independent like Iceland" people now explain away the double-edged nature of supposed independence. Incidently anyone know what the capital of Iceland is? The answer used to be Reykjavik but now it is apparently £3.

I am British > Scottish If Scotland was independent i would move to england Whats your opinions on the scottish few that want independence Speak for yourself. I'm not scottish, never have been and never will be. The people who mock and laugh at the people like myself who say that something has to change if we're going to survive long term only need to look at what's happening. The fishing is facing death by a thousand cuts, the oil and gas is being cyphened/stolen from under our feet and the British Government didn't even want the Total gas plant built here. On top of this the oil companies themselves are looking more and more towards offshore storage and loading which will ultimately end the need for the SVT. And the latest whizz is to close the Coastguard Station which is actually just another example of how Shetland is worked against rather than supported by the various governments it's chained to. Infact, it would be bad enough having one goverment working against us but we have no less than three. The EU, London and Edinburgh. If folk can't see that we're in a sinking ship then they never will......

Infiltrator
the British Government didn't even want the Total gas plant built here. Really, I must have missed this story - is there a news story anywhere on this? If folk can't see that we're in a sinking ship then they never will...... I don't believe it's sinking yet, however I do believe the ship is way too grand, has too many crew compared to the number of passengers and the captain hasn't a clue where he's headed p.s. if the Captain's not careful he might collide head on with the windmill covered iceberg just up ahead
Kavi Ugl
Yeh, it was mentioned in The Shetland Times earlier this year if I remember correctly but no link(sorry). I canna mind it word for word but it stated that the UK government didn't want Total to build the plant here. I guess if it was built sooth it would have given them some good pr and more votes..... I believe that Shetland is a sinking ship in the long term because once the oil and fishing have finally gone what's left won't be enough to sustain Shetland. I do totally agree though that the "good" ship SIC/Shetland is far too top heavy with too many crew with pointless, self created empires. Nevermind their jobs are safe because the poor old "bilge rats" will take the hits
