Here is a link to a Faroese house building website: Fjarðahús

These are blueprints... and sadly they are not colored, but there many houses of many sizes (this website is aimed at the faroese market, so there is no point in coloring the blueprints, because here in the faroes we think: "This is my house so I can paint it the color I like, just as long as is'nt the same color as my neighbor's house!"...thus the houses in the faroes are very colorful )

 

If you have trouble reading/understanding something specific on that website, please don't hesitate asking me...I'll be happy to help.

Thanks Griffin, and yes we certainly need some colour in our Shetland houses!.

 

To be fair, we have seen some nice coloured Scandinavian houses built but we have a long road ahead of us.....

 

Maybe if you have a little free time you could take some photos of some nice Faroese houses and post them here?.

 

It would be good if we could also see some more of this in Shetland.

I just don't get it, importing lots of wood for these alien structures, then painting the bright colours which don't compliment our muted tones in the landscape. They look as out of place as if we imported the half timbered oxblood cottages of Denmark.

(which is a thought probably for another thread, was there a similar way of telling which cottages belonged to the lairds in Shetland?)

Click here for some house colour ideas. It's a great system and paint retailers in Shetland could do very well from such a system.

I don't know if Fjordhus has been mentioned in this thread (the interwebs are too slow today to be trawling throught the whole thread), but they're worth a look.

 

We're thinking about getting a garage built as it'll match our Norwegian-style house nicely.

Yeh DizzyKipper, it would be great to see more of Shetland's old out buildngs being restored along the lines of those turf roofed ones in the photo. Infact, this has been done up at Nesting just half a mile north past the Skellister junction.

And I hope you will consider a nice red colour for your Norwegian style house - however, it'll look beautiful whatever you decide.
