Longdog
Hi, Just trying to let people know that if they are interested there is a Buddhist meditation group in Lerwick twice a month. Usually at the Peerie Cafe, but not always to please check, just PM me. It's not 'my' group BTW, just doing my bit to let people know about it. All traditions welcome. People new to Buddhism or mediation welcome too. This is primarily a meditation group thought there is tea and a chance to chat afterwards. Shetland Buddhist Meditation Group usually meet above the Peerie Cafe in Lerwick for a period of meditation followed by tea and chat. The group is open to people of all Buddhist Practises who can have a chance to lead the group in their tradition as well as people new to Buddhism. A donation is gratefully received to support the group. New people are always welcome even if you're new to Buddhism and have not meditated before. Please contact Kevin at 'kserginson at googlemail dot com' for more information about the group before coming

Longdog
Yeh no problem We meet up roughly fortnightly at the Peerie cafe at 7pm prompt. Dates are on the events calendar and can vary slightly. We do a period of meditation for around 40 minutes. If there are people new to meditation it could be adjusted to suit. We sit (in a chair if need be), kneel or lie down around a small altar with a statue of the Buddha on it, some incense and a candle. We pay homage to the Buddha and then 'sit' for meditation. Afterwards we have a cuppa and chat until 9pm. As we are an electic group of Buddhists, I'm from a Soto Zen tradition http://www.throssel.org.uk/ others are from Friends of the Western Buddhist Order Tradition http://fwbo.org/ and others from Tibetan traditions, our practises vary slightly but we all meditate in one way or another. Who ever is leading the group that night will lead a meditation in their tradition or 'style'. Meditation being, very basically, sitting silently in an appropriate position for yourself, allowing the mind to drop thoughts of this or that. Sometimes the 'leader' may guide you in the meditation, other times, for example, if I was leading I wouldn't and it would be just sitting; see this free ebook http://www.throssel.org.uk/sitting-buddha-book All you would need to bring is a cushion or two and blanket or padded mat to sit or lie on, or to use as padding for one of the chairs. We ask you let us know if you are coming so we can make time to explain to some one new to meditation what to do, so we can tell you how to get in and also because there can be some variation in when and where we meet. Hope this helps Kev
Longdog
Sneaky I've just realised you are not who your are wanting us to think you are Unlikedstudent. Why have you deliberately got a username similar to some one else on here but with a very different meaning? That's not nice you're not helping matters with your sockpuppet postings... khitajrah
I would guess female. Males tend to settle their differences with a punch-up (or less violent alternative) and then forgive and forget. Females tend to be more psychological and things linger for longer. edit: I should have said.... of those who resort to playground tactics in order to deliberately hurt someone else... males tend to, etc, etc.

Njugle
But the sources of irrelevant and inconsequential noises are as the sound of a distant waterfall to the pure and focused of mind. Rather than creating a trial, they offer the opportunity to enjoy the peaceful mind as clear as the crystal waters of the sunlit pool that is ultimately filled by the frivolous water flowing over the falls. Longdog
But the sources of irrelevant and inconsequential noises are as the sound of a distant waterfall to the pure and focused of mind. Ah... but to talk of a pure and focussed mind is to talk of the discriminating mind. When one truely sits dropping body and mind one just is, sitting Buddha. BTW for anyone who is thinking Buddhism is all about weird questions, statements or fixing motor bikes... it can be, but at the group we mainly just sit
Njugle
Ah... but to talk of a pure and focussed mind is to talk of the discriminating mind. Not at all. The pure and focused mind accepts all input, as the pool is fed from the waterfall, but the pool is still and clear and the waterfall opaque and exuberant. Neither is better than the other. ...and the guy sitting fishing for troots in the pool is the happiest of the three.
