Newcomer from the US

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, my name's Sanchez. I'm a university student from Washington state, USA. I've been interested in the unique culture of the Northern Isles for years now, and I'm excited to get involved in the forum.

I myself have never been to the Isles, but would love to come someday. I travel pretty widely, so far I've been all over Europe, to Iceland, and Japan.

I am a student of Linguistics, which basically means I study how language works and evolves. So far I speak Spanish, Russian, Mongolian, and some Japanese. Of particular interest, though, is the Norn language that was once spoken in the Shetlands. I would love to learn a little more about it, and would greatly appreciate anyone who'd like to talk to me about it. I've heard some people are considering reviving the language. Is this movement popular?

Anyway, nice to meet everyone. :)

Welcome...

What does your sig mean?

It's the first sentence of "Don Quixote". One of my favorite books.

Loosely translated, it's something like "In a place in La Mancha, the name of which I don't even want to remember, there recently lived a gentleman of the type who kept a ready lance, an antique shield, a skinny old horse and a fast hound".

Something close to..."In a village of la Mancha, the name of which I don't wish to recall, there lived not long ago a gentleman of those who always have a lance in the rack, an aged shield, a worn-out horse, and a greyhound for running. "

A virtual pint for recognising where it comes from...

And to Sanchez - welcome to Shetlink. Just a cautionary note...some folk get a bit nippy when our location is referred to as 'the Shetlands'. Shetland or the Shetland Isles/Islands or da Auld Rock are generally more acceptable. Or, for the fortunate few...'home'.

Oh, sorry Marooned, I didn't realize that. I'll try to remember.

I think your translation trumps mine, by the way. Do you speak Spanish?

Go on then, where's mine from?

Bravest Face by Rush. One of the best new songs from my favorite band.

What's your favorite album?

I think we'll get along, Marooned. :D

Absolutely not - I just wanted to see how easy it was to find out the answer. :D

Very easy, it seems...thanks to this dude http://www.nvcc.edu/home/vpoulakis/Translation/donqtr1.htm

Favourite album...Moving Pictures, probably, but a big hello to Hold Your Fire as well. And the S&A dvd which I appear on for a few fractions of a second http://www.therushforum.com/html/emoticons/2.gif

Excellent! I definitely enjoyed Hold Your Fire (Time Stand Still and Tai Shan particularly), and Moving Pictures is unarguably one of their best.

I don't know if I prefer any one over the others...I do know that my favorite epic is "Fountain of Lamneth" which people tend to overlook.
