Aberdeen harbour physically may not be suitable 100% of the time but Peterhead, Roysth, Scrabster have awful onward transport links and would be very remote preventing shoppers on foot which is one huge plus point of aberdeen.

also all transport companies have basis in aberdeen and service the boat very well.

what needs too be done is more money spent on aberdeen to make it more asscessible not only for the north boats but for the oil industry as well

Aberdeen Harbour must have made a fortune over the year with little improvements made untill recently.

plus aberdeens bus, rail and flight connections are very good.

Last nights ferry to Aberdeen is still sitting off Abz waiting to get into port. When will the powers that be get it into thweir thick heads that Aberdeen is no longer suitable for the ferries!

Just heard from someone on board that because its so rough the harbour is closed until tomorrow morning where it will be reviewed, going to be a long night for all on the Northlink.

You can from time to time make out the Hjaltland on the Aberdeen harbour webcam dodging outside the breakwaters.

Supply vessels and standby vessels have been arriving since she's been circling so it may be just her draught that's the problem.

Sitting on a Supply Boat in Aberdeen watching an listning tae da ferry speeking to the Harbour on da VHF. The ferry is made 2 attempts at getting in first time was in a bad squall wind wis gusting tae 50 knots. The second attempt they called aff due to heavy braking seas at the entrance to the harbour.

The biggest problem noo is da Tide is going oot anrunning intae da swell an heavy seas causing conditions tae be worse. Very low tides in Aberdeen aswell harbour is saying dir is a posibility dat da harbour will close due tae da sand bar at the entrance.

But hay wir sailing later today so alls good!!

So Northlink do not have a suitable ship and/or Aberdeen Harbour do not bother keeping the harbour in a fit state for the ferries to use. Maybe they are not that bothered if Northlink decide to use another port. Or are just convinced that there is no suitable alternative so Northlink just have to stick with Aberdeen. Now what if Inverness decided to build a ro-ro linkspan?.

How much sea experience have you got Malcolm..? If you know so much about it where do you think the ferry should go if you think Aberdeen's no longer suitable...

I'm a tad surprised Malcolm - it was only on the tourism thread that you appeared to be asking Shetlinkers not to post anything negative concerning tourism on here as tourists read the forum yet less than 24 hours later, you yourself post something negative about the ferries. Whilst your comments may well be valid re the ferries, has it not dawned on you that many tourists arrive via the ferry and your own comments may well have put them off?

By the same token Unlinkedstudenmt think of the possibility of tourists watching the ferry trying to get into Aberdeen harbour that just might change their minds about coming up to Shetland if the ferry cant even get into harbour to collect them or any tourists on board that cant disermbark who might be thinking "Sod this we aren't coming back if they cant get us into Aberdeen they shouldn't have sailed.

Works both ways :D

Anywhere the boat can get into without any problems. There must be a better harbour somewhere useful

I have just seen that video with chairs and bigger objects flying around on a cruise lineer posted on Facebook as something that happened to the North Boat. Sent a message to the person who posted it correcting their mistake but I am sure it would not encourage tourists to visit Shetland by ferry.

Maybe not that many tourists travelling to and from Shetland right now. Only Shetland folk going to do their Christmas shopping in Aberdeen. We are just back (and we had a fine trip) but I'm afraid at this time of year, it is just the luck of the draw. You pays your money and you takes your chance!

As someone else said, if they hadn't sailed , that would have been wrong too.
