just looked at your magic seaweed link and I would leave Aberdeen with the sma boat with a forecast like that far less a supposed ocean going ferry the size of Northlinks tubs. Just as well i dont have much faith in Magic seaweed.

It might not be comfortable but its a boat in the North sea WTF do you expect.

If these boats are not fit to venture out in a forecast like that god help them if they are caught up in an un forecast storm which while rare do happen.

Da scoty rave about our wonderful wind resource and our wonderful ferries that they paid for, but are not prepared to go to sea in our wonderful boats when our wonderful winds are blowing.

blooody pathetic

It's easy to jump on Northlink now, but don't forget they used to sail in much worse weather, then the "have you had an accident" claims started from passengers who didn't understand how to use handrails or the bed "side guards" etc..

Indeed I'm pretty sure a dig back through Shetlink itself might find a few posts criticizing Northlink for sailing in poor weather.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't..

Rather than whinging on here (yet again  ), if you feel strongly about how the ferry service is being (mis?)managed, how about writing to Northlink or even to the masters of the vessels and ask them to explain themselves.

We'll be all ears on the reply.

Quite simple really. If the driver does not want to drive the boat then I surely do not want to be a passenger. North boats have had incidents in the past and I do not want to be an incident in the present.

OK so by all means discuss the suitability of the boats for the route and their possible replacement by submarines or an extension of the clockwork orange but meantime it has to be safety first.

How about this for customer service.

Today all trains were stopped at dundee due to a tree on the track making all train passengers coming North late, were northlink answering their phonelines this afternoon? NO

So unless your journey today began in Aberdeen you arrived by Taxi at the pier to find the ferry still there and most probably empty, but could you get aboard? NO

As all the offshore workers coming ashore today that lived south of dundee could not get home Aberdeens hotels were fuller than usual, did Northlink take this into consideration when closing the check in? NO

So how many folks are sitting in Aberdeen just now trying to find a bed when there are empty beds they have paid for sitting tied to the pier?

The ash cloud has grounded all flights tomorrow so a lot more folk than usual will be trying to get on the boat added to those that have arrived late in Aberdeen today It is going to be crowded and I will wager there will be plenty that cant get passage far less a bed.

This is shocking customer service from what is supposed to be a lifeline link.

Staffing cost to keep the check in open would be nil because the managers who are salaried should be the ones to step in in times like this. so no excuses on that count.

I would say to all you Northlink apologists that their actions today show them for the waste of money and space that they really are, and the sprootle excuses they come up with for not sailing are just that sprootle

NORTHLINK YOU ARE PATHETIC

How about trusting to the captain's judgement? He is the fellow who is taking the rap if he sails in unsuitable weather. If by any chance we are delayed, I have always been able to get a message through and have been fairly dealt with, sailing when the boat sailed. Give Northlink a break.

They have sailed, or delayed sailing with/for bad weather, it what happens with commercial travel. Just coz they receive a sub for fuel as a life line does not mean they can sail at any bequest. You will just have to put up with it.

There are rules and risk assessments to follow, as we know, it is also about forecast and cost, and we all seem to have to pay.

Think of the money they will save by not sailing.

81 mph gust recorded at Inverbervie this evening - if you ever start your own passenger ferry service to Shetland remind me to avoid it.
