WiiMan
^^I take your point Mucklejoannie but I do think that Northlink should have a moral responsibility to retain jobs in the islands they serve even if they don't have a legal one. I hope our own elected representatives are doing something about this and not just leaving it to Brian Adam. I was told that three people recently left Northlink so we are actually losing a total of seven jobs there. Pretty poor when you consider that Northlink made all of P&O's office staff redundant when they took over in 2002.

The above statement is not true. I know, personally, staff who worked for P&O and are still in the employ of NorthLink, including many others who have moved on from NorthLink during the last 6 years. oddtablet
Mind you their terms and conditions have changed ! They are no longer entitled to statutory sick pay as Northlink are registered in Guernsay or somewhere and don't pay it I wonder what other loopholes they have found ? My apologies wills320. I'm aware that many of the sea staff were taken on by Northlink and drivers and storemen went over to Northwards, but I was referring to P&O's former customer service and office staff from the Holmsgarth terminal. Northlink forced P&O to make them redundant prior to taking over as they claimed to have no need for them. Something they backtracked on rapidly when it proved impossible to run a service with no staff!
Guest willz320
To be honest, I dont know what happened to staff at Holmsgarth - but most of key management were moved over from P&O for the head office in Stromness. Maybe the staff at Holmsgarth were rendered simply un-needed when all the core parts of the company were based in Orkney? Of course, that was before - like you said - more staff was definately needed!

Skunnered
Probably something to do with the prevailing hurricane.
JustMe
Or possibly a combination of bad weather and the unsuitability of the ships to provide a lifeline service in winter.
