Skunnered
Maybe so, but I don't think I'd fancy being out there tonight in any design of ship.

Guest willz320
Or possibly a combination of bad weather and the unsuitability of the ships to provide a lifeline service in winter. Oh look - a broken record.
JustMe
Or possibly a combination of bad weather and the unsuitability of the ships to provide a lifeline service in winter. Oh look - a broken record. And maybe we should add unsuitability of the mainland port to that.
Medziotojas
Re the poll at the top of the page: Couldn't Inverness also be an option? Do they have the facilities? I wonder how the entrance to this port fares in adverse weather conditions.

I wonder how the entrance to this port fares in adverse weather conditions. It depends on the purpose of your travel and what you want to do when you get there. Probably (and I don't know for sure) most people travelling on the ferry from Shetland want to do shopping or other business in Aberdeen or drive somewhere else further south. So there wouldn't be much benefit in landing in Inverness or anywhere else early in the morning, and then having a much longer drive to the final destination. Aberdeen is probably the most convenient point for the majority of travelers.
engineer21
Aberdeen opened again at midday we sailed soon after that and it was pretty bad for a start but seems too have eased off now tho ment to be worse 2moro the problems just now are eastly swell and low tide, the swell just at the breakwater is huge! pilot wont even come further than the first breakwater. as its eased now and low water times change i expect northlink too sail
Infiltrator
the swell just at the breakwater is huge! We watched one of the huge oil boats (seawell poss) head out @ 13:00 - as you said, the swell as it got to the end of the breakwater was huge, even a ship that size seemed to struggle a bit. Probably the best surfing waves I've ever seen at the beach - and not a surfer in sight - bunch of lightweights obviously
