its really bad for people that HAVE to book a cabin for whatever reason (familes, older folks with bad backs....that kinda thing) They HAVE to pay for an expensive cabin. When we worked it out it was going to be cheaper to fly away and hire a car than it was to get the boat with our car (with no cabin) SHOCKING!

I had an accident in July and had to get flown to Aberdeen by air ambulance. hubby came wi me and after 2 weeks he had to come hame. He went to Northlink was told there were no cabins which didn't bother him. When he went to forward bar to try and sit doon he said folk that were lying doon were told to sit up and they couldn't lie doon till the boat left Orkney. He said the security gaurds were like rotweillers and givin people a hard time for leavin bags to go to the loo/bar/shop etc. Needless to say he was exhausted and said he'll get the plane whenever possible rather than go through the hassles he seen on the boat.

I am coming home next June for the Hamefarin and have been looking at the best way to get up from Aberdeen. I thought flybe was over the top with their charges, so I turned to the Northlink web pages and couldnt believe what they charge. I e-mailed them to ask if the cabin cost was cumulative to the passenger fare and was told it was in addition! Thank god I dont want to bring my car I thought. Now reading your comments, I really dont fancy using the boat, not these days. I used to work on the old St Clair (1971 version) so thought it would be a doddle, can you tell me if there is a cheaper way to get back home in June next year?

Good luck, I dont know how they get away with it!

Cheaper way to get to Shetland?. Have you thought of a canoe?. Seriously the cheapest way from Kent would be to get a bus or whatever into London, overnight coach or best deal on the sleeper train to Aberdeen and then go on the boat without a berth. Maybe try comparing that with the British Airways fare from Heathrow to Sumburgh.

Another idea might be to get a cheap flight to Aberdeen and then rough it on the boat. At least that only means travelling for one night.

Had the joy recently of being on Pi*hLink and at teatime plumped for the steak pie, oh dear not good, dry as cardboard and such a shallow pie as i estimate less than an inch on the plate, no gravy of any kind poor value at £6.

The food has steadily deteriorated in recent years, shame the price has not....

Even the bar lass said to me there was no atmosphere onboard and that it was kinda depressing!

Shake up required me thinks....

^^^ When I was heading back down after ten days home, I had macaroni and chips. I literally took five bites and left it. The food is getting scandalously bad.

I've also heard it's better on the Hjaltland than the Hrossey, it was the Hrossey I travelled on both ways.

^^^ I personally think, what with the cost of a ticket with Northlink (especially at peak times - £100 return for a cabin, totally unreasonable ), that the price should include a voucher for both teatime and breakfast meals. And indeed a ticket to any one of the films.

It makes me sick that they charge so much, all because they have no competition.
