Infiltrator
Since Northlink started the service we've taken a chinese takeway on board with us. The food is poor quality and expensive for what you get. It also seems to have nearly as many staff in the cafe as in one that the council would operate. It's about time NorthLink woke up to the fact the service is a way of getting from A to B and not a cruise of the North Sea.
MJ
Discovered quite early on that the restaurant food is much better value for money, especially if you've got kids. For a couple quid more you can have food that actually looks and tastes fresh. Half portions for the kids without a chip in sight (unless requested). Having the quiet space in the restaurant lounge is also a great plus point, a good base for the kids and they're a little less strict about your bags being left while you pop out for a cig or to the shop. It's not like there's really anything to see other than other boats out there. I might add as well that it's usually too dark to see anything worth seeing anyway. spencey7
Since Northlink started the service we've taken a chinese takeway on board with us.I was under the impression that you weren't "allowed" to take food aboard to eat...? I haven't tested that theory though, I try my best to eat before boarding to avoid the stale, tasteless, extorionate grub they serve up.
Fjool
^ Pfft. They'd have to search my luggage to prevent me from bringing my own sandwiches and crisps with me. That'd give the sniffer dog something to find anyway, I guess
nederlander
^Slightly different to taking on a full blown take-away on with you though! I've never actually seen anyone doing that, so I'm not sure what Northlinks stance would be on such a thing!
j3ova
ive gone on board with a full KFC meal, no one blinked an eye. ive also taken my own drink etc on with me, the prices for food are silly both in the restaurants and shop..... I swear by flying now, would rather pay that little extra to travel for just an hour, you'd probably spend the equivilent for a plane ticket while on boat for 12 hours. I've brought a chicken supper on board before, although I ate it in one of the bar seating areas near where the shop is so that's maybe why I wasn't questioned about it. I also think I've brought a McDonald's on board with me before. Yes, that's just how bad Northlink grub is. Worse than my old school dinners. Byock. david
I always found the food on the Hjaltland to be poor and the food on the Hrossey to be not that bad. And the atmosphere and staff seemed friendlier on the Hrossey. To the extent that if I were going to be in Shetland for more than a week I'd make the point of making sure I was travelling on the Hrossey. Saying that, I've not been on either ship for a year now. They did orginally have notices up, but soon gave up. I know I complained, apparently you were only allowed to eat your own food in your cabin (if you could afford one and were lucky enough to get one)
JustMe
Last year I came back home on whichever boat called at Hatston in September and the food I had was really quite good. Not great but good. Good sized portions as well. This year I am flying because the connecting train fares from Aberdeen made flying make a lot more sense which is something Northlink and Zettrans need to look at. Frankie
Yes, that's just how bad Northlink grub is. Worse than my old school dinners. Byock. I actually look forward to having a meal on Northlink. My son also loves his school dinners. I'm not sure if that's a reflection of our meals at home though. I don't think so, because I like them too. I remember working as a student during the construction phase of Sullom Voe where the meals in my opinion were superb, yet there were plenty of the workers complaining about the quality being served up.I wonder what their meals were like at home ? Ghostrider
hi when does the friends and family discount start up again? thanks FERRY operator NorthLink yesterday (Monday) reintroduced its popular ‘Islander Family & Friends’ travel scheme with discounted fares. .....The scheme runs until 18 December.... http://www.shetland-news.co.uk/2009/September/news/In%20brief%20%E2%80%93%2015%20September%202009.htm
Tomblands
The food on the boat is just tired. They've been serving the same stuff in that canteen for the last 7 years. They could go a very long way to solving my main gripe with the canteen by heating the plates before the food is dumped on them. The food is normally stone cold by the time you've sat down. Coastie
^^ I quite like the quality of the meals aboard the ferries and have never noticed mine to be cold. Mind you, I don't like my food hot.
