JohanofNess
On nights the boat doesn't sail, the comments are along the lines of "da auld boat would hiv geen in dis". On the nights it does sail, and something unforseen happens the comments are like "weel, even da auld boat wouldna hiv sailed in dis". These comments are usually made by the same people. I'm quoting this again because it sums up 90% of the pissing and moaning going on in this thread. Ramsie does make a very good point about the criticism Northlink face regardless of what they do. It's rose tinted glasses syndrome, everything was better 20 years ago and all that guff. The only thing I really miss about the old boats was that you could lift the arm rests on the recliners and lie down properly and there was more recliners than the new boats. Some folk just like to moan, about something, anything as long as they can moan and heaven forbid anyone who questions their right to moan about something. Even if the reason they're moaning about something is flawed or down right wrong.
jimmy parks
paulbthe last time my oldest two were south they lost there escorts and end up on the ferry by themselves. they were well looked after. the two escorts were put on the cargo boat. again very good service. What on earth is this guy talking about? His pets?! Para Handy's video is entirely misleading. The boat is not rolling a lot but the spray from the sea braking over the pier makes it look like a helluva day!
paulb
well were feeling a bit grumpy. my two teenagers had gone to stirling with two adult friends. the kids and the lady got on the ferry on the way back. her husband messed up and missed the ferry the wife got off and the girls were left on the ferry by themselves. if im not allowed to praise good care and standards whats the point. Or are you just having a go because somebody said something nice about Northlink?
Guest Anonymous
if im not allowed to praise good care and standards whats the point. I think that both you and me are missing the whole point of this thread. It's only for complaints, grumbling, bitchin, etc.... Positive statements are obviously not allowed. I wonder how many of the older folks here, would be posting positive things on a P&O thread?Certainly not me. I prefer the comfort and safety of the Northlink vessels. Guest Anonymous
most boats are comfortable on a bonnie night n these are very safe cos they are tied up a lotYes, they're tied up, a little, on rough nights because complaining ninnies will sue them if they happen to spill they're coffee. Fear of litigation is a powerful force in Britain these days. Too many folk been watching too much US crap on TV.

Yea sorry auld rasmie, I was just wonderin what on earth the guy meant by his kids havin "escorts" who went on the "cargo" boat. I think PaulB has explained.I don't mind folk sayin nice things about Northlink. I personally think they are far far better than P&O overall. Security is a bit OTT though and I don't like the way they keep you prisoner on the boat even though its hours until the sailing.

I quite agree there Auld Rasmie.Ships have had to sail in some horrendous conditions over the years. My grandfather sailed in convoys to Russia. In a lot worse weather. And had to dodge torpedoes and bombers as well, he was not offered a choice. There was no health and safety concerns back then. I’m willing to bet he would have loved it, if someone had said, that they were staying along side the pier for a few more extra days
tlady
I have no complaints about the crew or their service. What scares me is the pressure nowadays to sail even on a night when all the rest of the shipping are heading in for shelter!! And please don't spout the "old boats would have sailed" because when the boats were sailing twice a week from the steamers pier ... "boat willing" was the expression used by retailers for supplies from the mainland. People seem to forget that it's not a motorway, it's an unpredictable stretch of water that HAS to be given respect or a tragedy is only a bad decision away! I’m willing to bet he would have loved it, if someone had said, that they were staying along side the pier for a few more extra days My first experience of sailing on the North Sea was the Northlink Ferry and I was absolutely gutted that it wasn't anything like the movies. No U Boats and Noel Coward wasn't on the bridge. I was so disappointed. Back to the plot: I think the Auld Een and PH above are bang on. It is all about litigation and folk feared for their cars. When we moved up here the trip was extremely bouncy and I was exhilarated - it really felt as if I'd made a proper ocean voyage and made Shetland seem that much more exciting.
