filsket
Simple really, sail direct to Aberdeen - Orkney is more than adequately served across the Pentland Firth.

MJ
Simple really, sail direct to Aberdeen - Orkney is more than adequately served across the Pentland Firth. here, here. It's mean't to be our "lifeline" service. Orkney has 2 other boat options. Why sail to orkney at all in the winter?
piggywiggie
The answer is to revert to P&O's timetable of 6pm-8am right across the board. But Northlink won't do this because the 12 hour sailing was their flagship policy for quicker sailings (as well as a tv in every cabin). I would quiet like to only have to get up at 7 to get off the boat for 8, anyone else agree? Extra hr in bed after all!As for tv in every room? Thats NEVER going to happen! It was a promise but they cant even keep their promises. It would be nice to have a proper TV room like the P&O used to have, that you dont need to buy headphones for!Or some othe form of entertainment. ITs pretty boring on the boat unless you like drink really!
JustMe
Mutton wroteAs for pushing the 5pm sailing from Aberdeen to 4pm that really is taking the mic. Can you imagine having to be on the boat by 3.30pm? The answer is to revert to P&O's timetable of 6pm-8am right across the board. But Northlink won't do this because the 12 hour sailing was their flagship policy for quicker sailings (as well as a tv in every cabin).Except that P & O had sailings via Stromness leaving at 12 noon southbound and I think something similar northbound. JustMe
Maybe this is the time for Shetland to start making a noise about Aberdeen Harbour needing to be dredged so that bigger ships can leave and enter at all states of the tide.
JohanofNess
Maybe this is the time for Shetland to start making a noise about Aberdeen Harbour needing to be dredged so that bigger ships can leave and enter at all states of the tide. They're spending as much money redeveloping albert and maitland quays that its not top of their list of things to get sorted out. Still it can't hurt for someone to make representations to them about it, thinking Tavish there.
mucklejo
yes just me, I agree. Aberdeen is a big and busy harbour and they need to get their finger out! Missed out on my trip to Aberdeen last week cos of "the tides at Aberdeen"
JustMe
Maybe what is really needed is the oil companies to start making a noise about the long overdue dredging of Aberdeen Harbour. Ferry delays are a pain for us but time is money for the oil companies. Would have thought that the powers that be would want to ensure that the Shetland ferries stayed with Aberdeen as the business will help once the downturn on North Sea oil traffic really starts to bite. Mutton
So is the transport minister going to start charging again for the Skye Bridge? Are they going to bring tolls back for the Forth Road Bridge?
JohanofNess
So is the transport minister going to start charging again for the Skye Bridge? Are they going to bring tolls back for the Forth Road Bridge? It's not likely and the cynic in me knows its because on a day to day basis more folk use it and he would look a right pillock after making a song and dance 3 year ago about making it free. Ironic now seeing as they need money to build a new bridge as the current one is having problems.

Frances144
Well they did a "trial run" on Sunday night, lying through their teeth about a fuel fault and we trundled along for hours. The Orkney folk suffered the most as taxis did not wait while they were hours late. We got in on time at Lerwick but the lying was unnecessary and one realises that it will serve for their feasibility studies no doubt. Btw, the food is beyond inedible now. I have had better boarding school food in the 1970's and that was disgusting.
david
I'm sure they weren't lying on Sunday night. They would know how long it takes to do the trip up on 2 instead of 4 engines without having to "test" it.
