So Northlink is discriminating against solo travellers who, because they cannot afford to pay for the extra berth/s will not get tea and coffee making facilities. While I think I understand Northlink's reasons for not providing the facilities in shared cabins I none the less blame Northlink for not having the foresight to provide single cabins for solo travellers and I will complain to the solo travellers ombudsman just as soon as one is appointed. Meanwhile I think all solo travellers with a berth should get vouchers for free tea or coffee from the bar.

I'm sorry but I had to giggle. This isn't discrimination, it is business. If they offer tea and coffee in private cabins, I'm sure that their belief is that more people will take these cabins instead of booking a berth of sleeper seat. Anyway, what I think you will find is that fares will be going up anyway, and this will end up being their justification.

But it is discrimination. Two passengers travelling together in a 2 berth cabin get free tea and coffee making stuff in the cabin. Two strangers sharing a two berth cabin do not get tea and coffee despite having paid in total the same as the two people travelling together. Clear case of discrimination against people travelling on their own.

Since this is a "lifeline" service rather than a cruise liner I think that it is unacceptable to penalise those travelling alone. In fact I think the next contract ought to specify a number of single cabins to be provided and leave it up to Northlink and others tendering for the contract to find ways of providing them on the current vessels. And yes!, some sort of sleep pod as mentioned earlier by stephen could well be the answer.

now to spend the journey on skype.

Skype worked on their system? They said they wouldn't allow streaming technologies too. That's great news thank you.

skype no problem, a wee bit slow on the video but no worse than dial up

I suspect this will change once the service becomes more popular. Only so much bandwidth for everyone to share.

looking forward to a quiet, mobile/pc/tv free crossing next week 8)

Now that I understand and agree with! One of the best things about the boat is, sorry, was, that you get peace and quiet from the constnat bleeps and flashes of todays technology.

I agree with that up to a point but if like some people you're not the best sailor and you just want to board and head to your room it might be beneficial to have the option to use the internet to cure the boredom.

Cheers

Very true. I do know some people find the boat boring, I'm fortunately not one of them. Usually that delighted to be getting a break the time can't go slow enough!

I can see me using the service to check onward travel, last minute rooms etc. Those sort of sites don't usually translate well to mobiles. Nothing wrong with options - its not like having ****ing Eastenders blaring from every telly so you can't escape!

longer ago folk used to yarn a lot more on the boat, find out all kinda ideas about what went on , redding kinn etc , but if theres a mobile signal ............ , an if mobile signals dunna get thru the steel cabin structures that well , is wifi going to ? plus if it has to be wired into the cabins then do you reckon the 'rude "parliament" will stand the cost of that free ?

I enjoy boats and the sea, luckily for me I've not yet succombed to sea sickness or I might have different thoughts

Looking forward to actually see something this trip, in not being dark on departing and arriving will be good. Might even get some nice photos.

If people need/want their technology that's fine. I sort of look on the ferry the same way as a bus other than having a bed to sleep in, and don't expect too much. Just want to get there safe and well.

Be better if we didn't pay so much for it though.

The news story said wifi in public areas and a wired network socket in cabins, so I guess that is the plan.

  • 2 weeks later...

the wifi on the boat seems to be very variable. 1st time it was great. 2nd couldn't get on, 3rd ditto, 4th - this time it keeps kicking me off. someone smart has given it everyone a quota that I keep breaking trying to load up pages. shetlink works okay though, but no email for me...

quota is 1000kb - no skype video calls for me this journey

The quota is 1000Kb? 1Mb? That's ridiculous if it is the quantity of data you're allowed to download before you get locked out. Shetland News' homepage often well exceeds that. Do you mean that the traffic is shaped towards you having a maximum of a 1Mbps (1024kbps) download rate? That would seem more reasonable and workable.

I travelled recently on the boat with my sister and her children in the 3 berth disabled cabin (my niece is disabled). On the way down we had the tea and coffee making facilities, on the way back we didn't. On the way back we could use mobiles in the cabin until we sailed which was new.
