DizzyKipper
Pleasant topic... Noticing that Shetland isn't covered in that clean beach guide thingy, I was wondering about them. I mean, there are loads of pipes running from shore to sea, and as far as I know there are no sewage works here? So does all the sewage just get dumped in the sea or something else?? Ghostrider
Most outlets in to the sea are only "soakaways", ie. they have septic tanks to landward, so in theory at least, only relatively "clean" water should be being discharged, the solids having been seperated and retained within the septic tank. The main reason for the pipe in most cases is simply to prevent there being liquid discharge from the tank running over the surface between tank and waterline. MuckleJoannie
There are sewage schemes in many country areas, Scalloway and Tingwall come to mind.

Guest Anonymous
Not sure how relevent this is towards pollution but I know that the esplanade area's sewage system isn't watertight and as much water leaks in during the high tide as leaks out during the low.. Ghostrider
....the only raw sewage ive ever seen on a beach in 44 years is adjacent to council houses in mossbank There used to be a raw sewage outlet in the gyppy at the sooth end of da street, atween da auld hoose at no. 10 an whaur da Country Club wis wint ta be. Kinda surreal ta stand on the lip and all of a sudden dirty blots, shredded paper or a t**d gud flying trow da wattir fae under your feet. No doubt long since blocked off and replaced by now though, that was 30 years ago.
