Plusnet

My original Broadband deal -BT option 1 - is no longer able to cope with my, ahem, accelerated lifestyle. Sure it was fine in the beginning, when it was just me and the occasional mp3, but now with the acquisition of the laptop the wii and the ps3 plus the advent of streaming tv and video from various sources both legit and otherwise, I find myself paying an extra 10 - 12 quid each month because I have "Exceeded my 10gb download allowance".

So I need to change Broadband provider, and I like the look of the Plusnet Extra deal that offers 60gb for £11.50 or thereabouts. So does anybody here know of any reason that Plusnet and I should not be joined together? If so would you kindly warn me to this effect? The last thing I need is to change ISPs and find myself with someone cheaper but less reliable. I probably won't need tech support but I would like consistent speeds and reliable connections.

I'm in Lerwick by the way. If you've made the switch yourself could you let me know your thoughts?

thanks

C.

I use Plusnet, have done for the past couple of years. Never had any problems with them

I recently upgraded my plan from £14.99 to £19.99 a month to give a better allowance.

They're certainly not the cheapest but there's no contract and you can change/cancel whenever you want to. (If you don't get any free routers etc.)

Plusnet are excellent, but beware of the download speed of p2p and streaming at peak times as its heavily throttled.

All throttling and monthly bandwidth limits are lifted from midnight to 8am, meaning any downloading you do at this time does NOT count to your monthly bandwith usage.

As mentioned slightly expensive, but the service is A+ , so you get what you pay for.

Have Plusnet, I'm a web surfer/gamer, and don't do too much in the way of downloading (game maps, updates stuff like that). I have a 80Gb allowance and get nowhere near it - 14.16GB is the most ever in one month.

There IS traffic shaping but not on the stuff I use, so it suits me.

I believe they have changed their packages, I think 60GB is the maximum allowance now, and it's a bit cheaper too.

Good service and speed, no problems.

Thanks for your input all. Much appreciated. Just one point re the traffic shaping: Although my P2P days are mainly behind me I do like to watch TV re the various broadcast re-players, Iplayer and the like, and I spend a fair time watching music performances on YouTube, so is that kind of stuff still readily accessible outwith the midnight to 8am slot?

plusnet are no use for p2p. if you care about that.

I would have to strongly disagree here. Considering the traffic is completely unshaped and uncapped between midnight and 8am, as long as you have a scheduler on your torrents or whatever it's perfect.

Waking up to several new TV shows is always a good thing.

*cough* not that i'd know ANYTHING about that! ;)

Just had to check something on my account. I posted a question using their ticket system and was told to expect a response within 5 hours.

10 minutes later I received an email response (not a standard response) and also a text message telling me to check my account as they had responded!

Very good service :-)

@ Chrish

yes, I have no problem with youtube, iPlayer etc in normal times.

Plusnet basically do two things. They make some activites more important than others so at busy times 'time critical' things have priority if needed. VOIP and gaming are the most important. Secondly, depending on the package you pick they may limit your speed at different times of day.

See these pages to see how it might affect you.

Prioritisation:

http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/speed_guide/traffic_prioritisation.shtml

Rate limiting:

http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/speed_guide/download_speeds.shtml

hope that helps
