JAStewart
I am currently going through a phase of enjoying post-apocalyptic/end-of-the-world/bleak/horror-thiller novels. Any suggestions? Some I've recently read: The Killing Moon by Rod Glenn, it was great. One by Conrad Williams - fantastically bleak, the ending of the book wasn't too great though. crofter
I am currently going through a phase of enjoying post-apocalyptic/end-of-the-world/bleak/horror-thiller novels. Any suggestions? Hopefully the phase will end soon, or you may become severely depressed! Anyway: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Road
JAStewart
Read and seen The Road. I love them! I think the art is finding hopeful-ness in these books. Hell, when I played Fallout 3 and had 100%'d it, all I wanted to do was help rebuild society by building homes. Maybe I should go work in a disaster area. JAStewart
My flatmate has Cats Cradle, but I'm currently reading World War Z. I've been recommended Canticle before too, I think that the LK Library has it so I might get it after graduation.
mainlander
How about The Stand by Stephen King, Memoirs of a Survivor by Doris Lessing, or Down to a Sunless Sea by David Graham?
ArabiaTerra
The Postman ~ David Brin, nothing like the film. I am Legend ~ Richard Matheson, again, nothing like the film, in fact, the film completely missed the whole point of the book, like telling a joke and missing out the punchline. I second A Canticle for Liebowitz, and there is a sequel which I haven't read yet ~ Saint Liebowitz and the Wild Horse Woman. Films ~ The Day After, Testament and the best of them all, Threads. I have copies of these if you can't find them. Some books I know about but haven't read yet: Earth Abides ~ George R Stewart The Earth Again Redeemed ~ Martin Green On the Beach ~ Nevil Shute And there is a fantastic book on the morality and consequences of nuclear war, The Fate of the Earth ~ Jonathon Schell, not fiction, but still one of the best treatments of the subject I've ever come across. I'm not sure if it's still in print but I can lend you my copy when you get back home (as long as I get it back!) Edit: Oh yeah, mainlander, Down to a Sunless Sea is fantastic, how could I forget that one.
JAStewart
I found On The Beach a bit boring and not bleak enough. I want wallowers, not people who just man up and take it
