Save Scalloway School

Recommended Posts

The super primary idea will almost definetley happen I think. Either that or more council offices. Speaking of council offices why aren't savings being made in Hayfield before school closures? l don't think having offices next to a school would have a good affect on primary education and there are a hundred arguments against closing cluster primaries

The new council offices are already under construction at the north ness in town.

I think that many people have missed the point with school closures.

If cost savings can not be made through school closures, then the Education Dept will make other cost cuts, which will effect the quality of education in every school in Shetland.

We have a choice to reduce the number of schools accross Shetland, or to loose many of the extra services and benefits which have made Shetland education so good.

It is the quality of the education for my children that I am concerned about, not maintaining the number of schools.

Just because it is change, doesn't make it wrong.

Sorry Paul.

I am a humble country folk.

And it's not about what I am or am not getting, it should be about what's best for Shetland education overall.

I do not relish the thought of schoos with expanded school class sizes to the national average, no swimming, no specialist art or PE or music, no money for school trips or classroom resources.

I have read the Blueprint from cover to cover, and these are the things that are going to be cut - in all Shetland schools.

Better to close a school in reasonable proximity to an alternative than to close a school and make the bairns undertake ferry crossings and nights away from home.

Overall, I'd rather see Scalloway closed than, say, Yell or Baltasound if any have to close at all.

Whether it makes any substantial savings though? I'm yet to be convinced.

Schoolteacher friend of mine in Shetland says they should make savings by cutting some of the staff at the Hayfield Hotel. She says its like a rabbit warren there with lots of folk doin very little. Thats where the savings shood be made, not by doin away with schools. Mind you Scalloway does not really have much of a case, secondary wise.

how come the social work department are moving from their current offices to offices that have just been done up only to be moving again in less than a year, surely if their offices in st olaf st have done this long they would last another year before moving to the new offices, without the need of a move to fort road in between. this is yet another waste of money by folks that have no more wit than a brain dead donkey.

Why do we fund idiots like this who claim to have the interests of our most vunerable members of society as their priority. yet they seem more intersested in having cushy officesto lounge around in.

Cut the social work dept by half as a start and that money could then be used for education of our kids and not the over inflated salaries of those jokers.

^^ If Social Work weren't being dumped on by the Court to produce "reports" on just about every beggar that ends up in the dock every time they do, the saving on wages, accomodation and admin work would be not inconsiderable.

Why are Social Work involved in working up what almost always amounts to grossly exaggerated bleeding heart irrelevant sob stories anyway. If someone is charged with something and believe there are mitigating circumstances in their current or past life that are/were a factor in why they did what they did, or should be taken in to consideration when sentence is being passed, isn't that what they hire a lawyer to take care of among other things. Does the Court really need both the lawyer and a Social Worker to be both told the same thing by the accused, and then both repeat it in court before the court can consider it. Seems to me to be duplication for the sake of it, either send the Legal Aid lawyer or the Social Worker home, one defence paid for by tax payers is one thing, a double one is just taking the piss.

here here ghosty, but it still does not explain why they have to move into specialy refurbished offices for less than a year before moving yet again. What it does show is that anyone who spends other folks money should be scrutinised very closely and held to account when the spending is unnessesary, sell their house out from under them if it is shown that the spending was not needed, and sack the useless buggers at the same time.

then ship them back out the sooth mooth if thats where they hailed from without a cabin on the boat.
