Wagon Wheel
Lets hope the councillors make the right decision tomorrow and leave all 5 schools open. If there has to be cuts lets all share the pain. I have been disgusted by comments in the press by a few councillors piting schools and communities against each other. I hope other councillors are not swayed by these bullying tatics. I am also shocked by the AHS, Sound and Bells Brae parent councils and Lerwick community council supporting cuts in other communities, no other community group has done this to another. unlinkedstudent
^ How though would they "share the pain"? It probably wouldn't be feasible to axe say a class in each school. Does Adult Education come out of the same budget? Are they slashing those?
Wagon Wheel
Teaching posts cuts resulting in bigger classes were proposed for most schools across Shetland but this option seems to have been dropped for now.
breeksy
Does Adult Education come out of the same budget? Are they slashing those? I believe that night classes are being cut this year, which imo is a shame as they are almost always over-subscribed.
Lively
depends on the patient. if they are ventalated then is too long. it also depends on conditions sumburgh can be fogged in and tingwall open. but its best to have alternatives. Lively
Why is it that Dr Wills is always scaremongering in the Shetland Times? Has he ever written a letter thats not beeen along these lines??
stilldellin
Well surprise surprise, that's Burravoe and Uyeasound schools gone, a few more houses on the market for more incomers bleeding the wellfare services and even more costs to the council... Almost as if a shetlander has never begged for anything. I totaly agree with you there, i know quite a few Shetlanders who would be shocked if they had to do a days work. please dont blame everyone but yourself for desisions. big familys, big council hoose and a free disabled car to match. so anti anybody atacks just goes agenst you. now they are keeping 2 schools open that means all the other schools have their budgets cut to keep them open. There is no more money going into the education pot. We all have to share what is left amoung the everyone still open. I would like to know who far the Donrossness kids travel on the bus everyday, if its good for them mabe that policy should be taken on by all schools?? And yes I would fully agree, plenty of scroungers here already as you will find anywhere.
GypsyScy
Just a thought - If all the Councillors seem to think the present AHS is perfectly adequate then maybe the biggest money saver of all would be to cut their losses and completely scrap any planning or building of a new school, surely that would save any amount of millions in to the pot??? Maybe you should get a map of Dunrossness and Yell out fusion, remember it's West Yell to Mid Yell the long way round. about 14 miles ! ( by the way you're not a councillor are you ? )
