You'd 'imagine'? No need. You'll find there's a thriving trade in reconditioned parts

reconditioned and secondhand are two entirely different things, i doubt very much a private enterprise would find it profitible to strip an old machine send it away for remanufacture and then ship back for resale. arf indeed.

Geordie Robertsons shop has very little overheads at the hillhead they used to sell about 50 washing machines a month i was told. Dont know how many now , more i would think. If they can have the biggest share of the market in shetland from the small site at the hillhead they would be mad to move. It does seem a shame that Smith & Harpers shop has been empty for so long. It make a good shop for Chris Hodge if he upgraded his stock quality.

Thats 600 washing machines a year. My Zanussi is ten years old, so I doot dey widna class me as a good customer.

I ken before Geordie Robertsons wis sold they had a large garage on the Hillhead and garages at the foot of Prince Alfred Street, full of appliances.

As for no overheads, I doubt they will likely have a large business loan and in an ideal world one larger premises with storage would be ideal, but they likely need to walk before they can run,

The new owners have hit the ground running though and good luck tae them.

Im always a bit worried about changing something that seems to have worked well for years incase it ruins it. But thats likely more to do with my age.

I suppose there is always the ald addage "if somethings not broken, dinna fix it"

Is that not what "Appliance Rescue" does? If they are still around. I think they reconditioned them locally. They certainly used to advertise in the Times.

Mabey a bit off the subject, but I remember many years ago trying to decide whether to fix an old lawnmower or get a new one. I ended up pricing all the spare parts you would need to make a new mower and it worked out at about four times the price of buying a complete new one. Plus you would then have rediculous shipping costs for each bit and then you would have to put it all together. So I doot ders money to be made in spare parts (even second hand bits).

I just got a new een.

The free disposal costs you anyway, unless the old beast is stone dead it has some resale value.

Where does GR say Geordie Robertson's re-sell old appliances, or strip and sell parts or whatever?

How about instead of giving it away to them for free disposal, You might just re-sell it yourself?

Is this really such a throwaway society, that that thought seems to have passed you all by?

Judging by your posts banzai, the words "stones" and "glasshouses" come to mind.

Anyhoo,

i should think the Geordie Robertsons management team can decide where to trade from by themselves. It has got nothing to do with anyone else.

This is probably the most pointless thread that has ever been on Shetlink, and there has been a load of drivel posted up on here lately.

Those who read what is written, and understand it, stand out from those who don't/won't/can't.

Harry Hay's saleroom, Shetlink Classifieds, the Times Classifieds et al is where I was with that.

Lerwick ....answer this how do you think the business has no Over heads did they get the business for nothing didn't think so a colossal bank loan I would think??!! Also buiseness rates, insurance, rubbish collection, vans, wages just to name a few I'd imagine a business owner myself, different line of business but same principles Ghostrider they don't 're-sell' appliances get your facts right before you post garbage
. Rateable value on goerdie robertson shop is 6500 not a lot. very little overheads. They run a good shop overheads are low. Tesco will not put them out of buisness. Is your buisness as good, i dont think so with the sound of you. If your buisness goes to the wall it will be sold for peanuts so the next owner will have very little overheads as they will have not a colossal bank loan.Prices can be lower, Its a win win situation for us common working people.
