I think the people who are upset at some of the postings on this thread will find that it reflects a majority view in Shetland.

But for the love of pete, no-one is literally suggesting that the protesters should be sunk to the bottom of the sea in their little yellow pod.

Now, let's think about a few things for a moment.

1. If Shetland didn't have oil and the associated industries what kind of a place would it be?. No Sullom Voe terminal with all the jobs, no charitable trust, no harbour activity from the oil ships that service the oilfields and thus none of the fabrication and other trade jobs that are hired in by these ships. And look at the Total gas project.

Granted, I do feel that Shetland got/gets the crumbs from it's own table but nevertheless as things stand oil has brought an immense amount of prosperity to Shetland.

And where else in the world has the oil industry and natural environment lived alongside each other so well?. Shetland has a track record to be proud of and that didn't start yesterday - it started when wise old Shetlanders, as councillors, put in place strict rules and procedures so perhaps a little respect should be shown to them for their wisdom and foresight. They saw a window of opprortunity and grabbed it whilst doing their best to protect the "Auld Rock".

So, the day will come when the world "goes beyond oil" but until then Shetland needs the oil industry and the oil industry needs Shetland. And that's why the majority of folk resent GP and what they're doing to the Stena Carron.

I'd like to pose 7 questions for Greenpeace ...

Quite right, and just the sort of questions - real world questions - which their supporters won't be asking. Greenpeace are not at all the "little organisation fighting big business" which they started out as, as one or two posters have commented. I used to support them for the most part, but no longer. For me, the final straw was this little gem, encouraging inter-generational warfare in the holy name of their beliefs (hope the youtubifying works, after Pooks' tutorial on how to do 'em):

Nobody wants oily crud washing up on Shetland's shores, but there must be better ways of achieving that than their chain-dangling sort of idiocy.

IMHO Greenpeace activists - endangering people, property, and environment through their actions - are barely any different from terrorists, and should be treated as such.

(** mod edit - removed a poor taste comment - mind the T&Cs **)

Quoted at random, but pretty representative of some of what has been posted.

Jonathan Wills has said precisely what needed to be said. It is astonishing that folk in a community whose livelihood depends more than any other in the UK on a clean and unpolluted environment should lambast those who seek to hold to account those with the potential to destroy that livelihood.

And the people most likely to destroy that livelyhood are Greenpeace! Thus the reason for the strong sentiment in this thread.

People of Shetland are not stupid. We know Greenpeace have no caring for the environment nor their fellow man, this has been made, and is being made, abundantly clear again and again.

So Greenpeace has decided to end their protest or face arrest? Not exactly 'suicide bombing' is it?..

Anyhow, the reason for their retreat is not the concern at the moment, more where these thick skinned (and headed) terrorists may decide would be a good place to re-arm or re-stock?

I hope they plan to use the "month of food supplies" to save them landing in Shetland.. I think an 'anti Greenpeace' demonstration should be mounted otherwise!?..

Just see in now Greenpeace using biological warfare and attacking everything with pesticide

Or using Black and Decker cordless drills. To do some damage. Just peeing my self

With that picture in my head.

That is the sickest, most pathetic video which has ever been posted on Shetlink. Do they really think that using a stereotypical druggie in a hoodie is any way to get a message across?

Thanks DamnSaxon for pointing out how pathetic these intellectually challenged individuals really are.

People seem unaware of just how much oil is being released into the oceans all the time. It is an entirely natural process. The problems only occur when fragile eco-systems are overwhelmed.

this is a very good point and often overlooked if not glossed over.

taking the unfortunate events in the gulf for example, the spillage of oil from the well would pale in comparison to the cumulative amount of minor spills, 'controlled releases' and natural sea bed seepage over just a few years in the gulf of mexico, it is just the ratio of volume over time which gets the press coverage. and that its a british company

Bet the dope on a rope is glad of the court order. The gap-year student must have been a bit cold and uncomfortable so far away from mommy!

A proper eco-warrior wouldn't cave in so easily!

Have a lot more respect for the boy hanging from the anchor chain than I do for the folk joking about dropping the same anchor or blowing up their boat. I don't go along with Greenpeace and I'd sign a petition telling them to sling their hook out of Shetland but I do respect someone willing to make a stand against something they see as wrong.

You might want to see the devastation to large parts of Russia and Africa.

Huge areas contaminated.

The greed of the oil industry nearly destroyed south mainland.

as it happens ive worked in africa and currently work in russia for an international drilling company, contracted by a huge multinational often branded as the greediest and i have seen no devastation, in fact zero ill effects that would not have come from any other 'gold rush' anywhere else.

the health safety and enviromental standards we uphold are actually better than north sea standards and the only side effects of our presence are the massive improvments in infastructure and commerce for the locals.

And a bloody good few of the locals capitalised on that!.. Many lost and many made a gain!

Greed is a human thing. We've all benifited from oil.. Yes?

I don’t deny that Shetlink has its uses. For example, it’s a place where the ignorant, the daft and the downright nasty can vent their spleen without any editorial control (apparently) but also without causing much harm. Normally I ignore the ravings of its more eccentric contributors. However, some of the Shetlink petrolheads’ comments on the Greenpeace protest are getting Shetland a bad name.

given a large quantity of jonathons constituants are involved in the oil and gas industry, i find it ironic how ignorant they will find him whilst reading some of his ill informed and down right stupid questions.

having a spare bop stack on board in case the one on the well didnt work would be like having a spare set of wings stashed onboard a plane, when the games up the games up.
