Twerto
Dr Jonathan would be well advised to consider who it is that he's refering to when he whinges about Shetlink contributors. There are quite a few subject matter experts adding their opinion to this thread and probably a good number of his constituants. If he feels that our opinions are casting a poor light on Shetland, he should remember that, as a councillor, he represents Shetlanders and should try to explain to the wider public why it is that Shetlanders are not happy about Greenpeace's actions, not make childish remarks about Shetlink as a whole. Yes, there have been 'over enthusiastic' comments made but it's easy to filter those out with some common sense. There have also been some valuable pieces of infomation shared. Shetland has a long history with the sea and has had more than few tragic stories. Greenpeace have not shown any respect for the weather, the sea, the hard working folks aboard the Stena Carron nor those people who would have to save them when their acts of folly endanger life. The locals are those who 'know best'. If we say that GP are acting foolishly then you better believe that that's probably true. I don't know who Jonathan Wills is trying to impress but he's backing the wrong horse. Here here,
Northerly
If we respect our environment (which must be the right thing to do in any case) Oh I agree. But do we really need the eco-fascists of Greenpeace telling us a.what we need to do and b.how to do it? Particularly when the hypocrites don't practise what they preach. And as for Jonathan Wills, his only interest in this subject is that its the current "hot potato" and poking his oar in is a good way of drawing attention to Jonathan Wills, seeing as how the stooshie at the council has quietened down now. He is the very embodiment of that famous quote from Oscar Wilde "there is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about and that is not being talked about." Gorgonzola Butt-cheese
Well I hope after this one, the greenpeace top brass get round the table and think about what they are trying to achieve. They appear to have only managed a very small amount of publicity and much of that appears to be negative, well around here at least. From my own discussions with people in Shetland, it's about 95% think they are just a bunch of damned fools. And thats people from a variety of ages and backgrounds whom I met throughout the working week. At least Dr. Wills did concede that the protests of grenpeace would be better placed at the boardrooms of the corporations they are protesting against. Their protests could be much more imaginative and done in a way in which they are practising what they are preaching, (not burning tons of fossil fuels in a big old steel ship). Clean out and sink all your motorized ships to create artificial reefs, get back to sail for starters. Personally I hope greenpeace do continue to exist and realize they have to change their " modus operandi" There is after all a very valid message of which we all need reminded. The worlds resources are finite and we do waste them in spectacular fashion.
icepick239
After the way Jonathon Wills denigrated the Shetlink contributors in print, I don't know why people should pussyfoot around him anymore. He has conveniently forgotten the support of the last year, probably from many people who contributed to Shetlink. It appears therefore, that he's become even more of a pwik of the first degwee.... EM
Bye bye Greenpeace, don't hurry back. The AIS seems to indicate that she's now buggering off pronto. There was a weird interlude earlier involving the Island Champion. Perhaps she was delivering the pod, but it wasn't at all clear what was going on. They certainly got close and dodged around each other.

Ghostrider
The AIS seems to indicate that she's now buggering off pronto. Probably wise, I can't imagine that anybody onboard her would get a particularly hospitable welcome in the toon, especially on a Saturday night. When, shall we say, levels of decorum and tolerance may be at somewhat lowered degrees as a result of substances ingested etc.

There are any number of reasons why its a good idea to eventually break our addiction to fossil fuels, not least among which is the fact that they tend to come from some of the most unstable parts of the world. The day that we can tell the Arabs/Iranians/Russians etc where to stick their oil/gas will be a day of liberation for the West! I think most folk these days recognise this, and don't need a bunch of pseudo-intellectuals masquerading as so-called "activists" telling us (and in any case they tend to be nothing more than a bunch of control-freaks who like nothing better than cramming their "world-view" down other peoples throats whether they want to hear it or not). Whats more I am not going to be taking any lectures from those who do not practise what they preach. So as you rightly say, lets see Greenpeace themselves setting an example, going "beyond oil" and getting rid of the ships, RIB's, helicopters etc. How about they invest the money saved into research into alternative fuel sources and actually show some leadership for a change. EM
The track of the Esperanza is remarkable. She took a huge zig-zag and is now heading east again. It looks like a torpedo avoidance course of old. I've no idea what they might be up to.
Ghostrider
^^ Wasting diesel, and contributing needlessly to global warming.
unlinkedstudent
Well, according to one of their youtube wotsits, the vessel saves power because it has one diesel engine and one electric engine. Blimey, they even use the heat from the engines to heat their hot water and central heating system!!!!
Northerly
According to their website, the vessel is powered by 2 x 2,938 BHP V12 Sulzer Diesels, although funnily enough it makes no mention of how much fuel they burn or what their emissions are (quelle surprise!) http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/about/ships/the-esperanza/ That said there are enough mariners on here Im sure who could give us an idea of how much fuel such engines would burn/emissions they would create. Might be fun to follow them on AIS and calculate how much crap Greenpeace is pumping into the atmosphere!!
shetlandpeat
It will be about opinions. I am sure Greenpeace think there is a bigger payoff because they think it is worth the costs Folk here would think differently because they don't think it is worth the costs or just want to use it as a point of complaint. EM
I think the following statement from Greenpeace does appear to be true: ... at the moment it is not clear where we are going next. http://www.erik-moncrieff.com/misc/EsperanzaCourse.png
