It will be about opinions.

I am sure Greenpeace think there is a bigger payoff because they think it is worth the costs

Folk here would think differently because they don't think it is worth the costs or just want to use it as a point of complaint.

There is no opinion involved. The fact they are burning huge amounts of fuel and regularly put the environment and fellow man at risk are out there for all to see.

There are many reasons already covered why they get little sympathy here, but possibly the biggest is that we know they could be doing everything they do, very easily, without polluting or risking anything, if they used sailboats and actually gave some thought to their protests.

Well, according to one of their youtube wotsits, the vessel saves power because it has one diesel engine and one electric engine.

The Esperanza has a diesel electric propulsion system, ie the diesel engine is used as a generator for an electric motor which does the work. Some of you may be familiar with this system on diesel railway engines. From the document below

Ships with diesel-electric propulsion are in a better position to reach the attribute of "green ships". For instance, as the engines run at constant speed, they can be adjusted in such a manner that the exhaust gas contains only a minimum percentage of harmful pollutants, in particular if the shipowner decides to use low-sulphur marine diesel oil rather than heavy-fuel oil available as "waste" residues from the processing and refining of crude oil. Furthermore, at lower loads, the constant-speed engine produces less NOx and CO2 than a diesel engine operating at variable speed.

A ship of this size fitted with diesel - electric propulsion, would probably burn 10 to 15 tons per day at full speed.

Cruising around at steerage speed during the protest probably, burned 2 - 3 tons per day.

Even the most efficient engine needs a lot of juice to propel 2000+ tons of steel through the water.

She probably carries between 150 - 200 tons of fuel fully loaded (maybe more).

I might be wrong but that would be my guess.

Sail boats could be an ideal. Though it makes you wonder about the bigger picture. What they burnt is very small compared to the waste the rest of the population produce.

It is still an opinion, say that they got their point across, a larger amount of pollution would be saved.

And they are an easy target compared to the huge polluters of this world.

And that is an opinion, so, to say it is not an opinion is an opinion, in its self it is more floored than me saying the opinion of Greenpeace is that they think burning a few tonnes of fuel against savin a lot more bein used is an opinion. You have sorta said that in your opinion, their opinion is not an opinion and therefore not an opinion.

Of course it would be easier to get rid of Greenpeace than to think about how individuals could save the way we live.

I wonder how much fuel is burned by the power station to allow folk to leave stuff on standby.

Except, Greenpeace are doing, in their opinion, something they think is right.

em, my opinion.

another opinion of mine agrees with the opinion that |Greenpeace are not the same organisation that I joined 20 odd years ago, but in my opinion, they do highlight the floors in the oil companies opinions that things need to be changed.

IMO

Perhaps Ms Leila Deen would like to repeat her green-custard-chucking exploits but this time over an oil Sheikh outside Saudi Aramco HQ in Dhahran? Or maybe the Esperanza could pootle off to the Gulf and let her RIB's go toe to toe with those of the Revolutionary Guards Corps, just to show that it is actually oil per se they have a problem with and not just the West using oil. After all, this is a principled group of people right? Or don't their principles extend to the chance of a good thrashing at the hands of the Saudi Mukhabarat or being shot at by the RGC?

Reading the article on the Shetland News it just seems as if GP don't know when to stop.

Some of their claims about this "protest" are fantasy like "huge success" and Global attention(sic). Erm, it certainly wasn't making much headway on Sky News or the BBC....

I wonder if Chevron picked up on the anti-Greenpeace feeling in Shetland....?.

According to the AIS, the Esperanza is just running ahead of the Stena Carron, so I doot they have not finished with thier foolishness yet!!

^^ More pointless self-serving publicity seeking. They don't want to stop the SC going anyplace, that line in entirely b/s. If they really meant what they're saying the place to be effective would have been to wallow around in front of her bows where she was lying as she was about to get underway, or at the very latest while she was still relatively close to the east coast of Shetland. A hundred miles off Flugga or wherever she has far more room to maneuvere, and they have infinitely more swell to contend with.

Of course "Ohhh! Loook at us heros, we stopped her dead in her tracks" has more headline appeal than "We're still stopping her leaving".

Greenpeace now are a to the enviornmentalist movement what Paris Hilton is to the celebrity circuit, famous for being (in)famous, but being for sausage all use in their own right.

^

Just when it seemed they couldn't do much more to lower their popularity here, she manages to do so at 2:10  .

As for the current AIS info, it doesn't seem to fit the statements reported by Greenpeace. The Stena Carron has been stationary for hours.

Yep, and there's a British customs vessel sitting in Lerwick harbour doing nothng......

The least they could do is get out there and shadow these pansies instead of harassing Norskie fishing boats who are simply fishing and trying to earn a living.....unlike Greenpeace.

I see both are well north of Shetland and I'm guessing the Espansy will need to re-fuel at some time which means she'll have to abandon the chase.
