From the photos, neither of the anchors are actually in use. Am I correct in assuming that the vessel is in fact holding direct position without any fixed mooring? If so, it would be a hoot if she just set off on her business with the "heroic climbers" hanging on pointlessly like a dollop of sharn on a yow's bum.

Seriously though, these clowns seem to have taken the law in too there own hands. Wouldn't it be worth it to get a few people together, a boat some hoses etc and just knock these clowns off the boat!!!

 

Like that terrorist attempt at Glasgow airport, shetland is not the place to come and get public support about oil exploration!!

 

How much gas did there boat use to get here!!!!

 

God help us if our emergency services are tied up saving one of those clowns and somewhere someone else is in desperate need.

Mattie, if you're actually a Greenpeace supporter, now might be a good time to leave Shetland, before the rest of Shetlink wakes up.

 

I agree that there needs to be something done to prevent another disaster like the Gulf. But Greenpeace are just a joke, and unlikely to have any credible influence on anything or anybody. If it was Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy who were at the head of the campaign folk would be much more likely to take them seriously.

Yes EM, You are most probably right, the vessel will be holding position using a dynamic positioning system.

At first I wondered why they were sitting with the anchor walked to the waterline in that way.

But I reckon it must be a safeguard against the DP system failing, so that they can drop the anchor quickly to avoid going ashore, ( seeing as they are in close proximity to a rocky shorline). Having the anchor walked out like that would save vital minutes and seconds in the case of total power loss.

 

I did notice they only got about a 30 second mention on the scottish news, never noticed any mention on the national news.

How many Shetlinkers are up for a bit of direct action against Greenpeace? Probably not a good idea to explain exactly what I have in mind here but these people are needing a bit of their own medicine. They have a support infrastructure and perhaps it needs to be partially or totally 'disabled'. When their flagship gets into Lerwick today it will be a focal point for the media and merely add to the circus - it should be our target.

 

They came here on the Northlink ferry with vehicles and boats - the irony being the ferry is one of the least fuel efficeint vessels in the northern hemisphere!! Aah well, once we have all returned to sail to get around things will be much better.

I'm told so. Certainly, the anchors were as they are now well before the protestors arrived.

Yes, the Stena Carron is holding her position on what's know as DP, or Dynamic Positioning or in other words GPS/Satelitte.

 

When a large ship like this is close to shore like the Stena Carron is then they have the anchors half lowered as a precaution incase the DP fails.

 

Boy, I hope somebody does do something to these limpits and as was said gives them a taste of their own medicine.....

Well I am inclined to think that the protesters and Greenpeace generally mean well and I do hope that they are not proved right by some future disaster with one of the deep Atlantic wells.

Well done some of the shetlink contributors on this thread. Shetlink is a window on Shetland visible throughout the world. The content is fully indexed by Google, and archived for posterity by Google and other services.

 

From some of the contributions on this topic, the international image of the Shetland community will be of knuckle dragging rednecks discussing the possibility of assault and attempted murder on folk taking part in a peaceful protest. Not a great image to share with the world.

 

Imagine if the boot was on the other foot? A green website discussing the possibility of drowning or assaulting, lets say oil workers or fishermen? That would be just as wrong and condemned as such.

 

Regardless of whether you like Greenpeace or not, their action has highlighted the issues of deep water oil exploration. Folk can argue there is zero risk from this, or otherwise. But to simply attack the messenger is a cop out.

Personally I've got a lot of problems with how Greenpeace operates and their views on some areas, but that doesn't blind me to the fact they have ample grounds for worry about deep water oil work.

Whilst relatives buried their dead from the deep water horizon rig, and BP continued to pump millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, BP in this country continued with their greenwash PR offensive. That for me is the greater evil than a few caped crusaders in Lerwick harbour.
