Baron Farkoff Posted September 22, 2010 Report Share Posted September 22, 2010 Ah, just done some more research and discovered that BP have been granted an injunction against greenpeace disruption off the west coast.suing them for 1.4 million would bankrupt them apparently, and they stopped sharpish.I cannot help but feel that their actions would be perceived as much more powerful if they concentrated their efforts on changing the law at source rather than getting by on their own buzz from stunts which polarize opinion so violently in the real world. As time goes by, they lose credibility by losing court cases, and are increasingly perceived as ineffectual tree-hugging lentil eaters rather than brave champions of the earth which they obviously think they are, and could be if they did things thoroughly.IMHO. Probably not a good idea to explain exactly what I have in mind here but these people are needing a bit of their own medicine. They have a support infrastructure and perhaps it needs to be partially or totally 'disabled'. When their flagship gets into Lerwick today it will be a focal point for the media and merely add to the circus - it should be our target.That is an interesting proposal. Just what does it actually illustrate? Schematics need not always be drawn to scale of course, but just look at the numbers and the relative sizes. At best it says, "10,000m is deeper than 1,500m, which in turn is deeper than 400m." At worst: "Even the BBC haven't a clue what they are reporting about." surely the narrative would have informed you it is a rough illustration of the traditional limitations of offshore drilling, it was attempting to show by dumbing it down, clearly not enough, that the gulf well was close to the extremities of deep water drilling capabilities discounting of course harsh enviroments. 400m approx is the max operating depth for the older non DP anchored type semi submersible, the 1500m is earlier generation dp semi submersibles and the 10000m is the gen 5 and 6 semis and modern drill ships.there is of course all variants in between. The anchor windlass is hydraulically powered. On most ships it is a fairly simple heavy duty clutch.You have two choices, you can let go an anchor unclutched, in which case as you release the break it will plummet towards the seabed at speed.Or you can lower it clutched in, in which case you can walk it back all the way down and all the way back up again.Its mostly lowered clutched in, unless in an emergency.It can be a bit juderry as the chain comes oot / in o the chain locker. But step by step approach 1.) Have a tool box talk and complete a thorough risk assessment2.) Prepare team to lower a man in a safety harness just above the pod.3.) Pass down to him, a suitably certified wire and shackle of the correct safe working load, passed through a suitable lead or block.4.) Connect to strong point on top of pod from which it is presently hanging5.) Using drum end of windlass, take the weight of pod on newly attached wire6.) When satisfied pod wieght being held safely, cut away original securing arrangement.7.) Safely lower to back deck of awaiting lerwick pilot boat with police officers in attendance as witness.8.)
