I remember a full page advert of discounted cars after September last year. Winter is coming garages need to sell to keep their cash flowing. The last car i bought was on Ebay at a two thirds the price of our local second hand dealers. The car was also delivered to Aberdeen from England by the seller. If you want to buy a second hand car from a local garage price it on Ebay and tell the garage how much you can get the same car for and if they dont play ball dont buy it.

^ You don't get a warranty from the clowns on ebay and you have next to no chance of getting your money back if your new car turns out to be a lemon. You pay your money and take your chances.

Not everybody knows what to look for when they are checking over a car and some ebay sellers make the most of that to sell complete rubbish to unsuspecting buyers.

Yeah but not everyone on ebay selling a car are clowns, if you don't know much about cars you can get someone who does to go and do an inspection on the car, granted it costs you but it could save you being landed with the lemon. There are many good cars on ebay, personally I wouldn't buy one I couldn't see before I bought it but I know plenty of folk that have and gotten a decent motor out of it.

Arnold Clarks website is not too bad prices for used car . If you need a guarantee on the car you buy, buy from a dealer,a lot of car dealers advertise on Ebay , the autotrader site is quite good too. If the second hand dealers dont sell at your price leave them with their sheds and yards full.

totally irrelevant, laughable infact.

its like saying you bought a lamp from a car boot sale cheaper than you could at harrys.

there is a difference between value and cost perhaps you havnt grasped.

its no secret im a proponent for buying locally, and its not because i have money to throw around.

like for like, as well as factoring in effort, organising, risk of buying a lemon, shipping, etc etc. ive always found better "value" in buying locally at a negligible difference in "cost"

I think its irrelevant to you but the money saved by Lerwick was very relevant to them. You're not willing to make the effort to hunt about and get the possible car for the money but they are what's the issue?.

the issue is, value isnt just about saving cash. i would put much more emphasis on saving time, effort, hidden costs, buying from a tried and tested source and the aftersales that is associated.

you are missing the point if you think the price tag is the most important factor in relation to value.

thats the issue....

I don't disagree with you there is definitely something to be said for having the peace of mind of a local source to return to when things go wrong but on some cars the price differential is large enough to make you think twice, my mother got absolutely ripped off buying an Impreza on the isles and while she has the dealer to return to she only got a 6 month warranty. If she had asked me to look her out a car down here for the budget she had I would have got her a newer car with less miles and maybe a slightly better spec.

If you are already planning a trip south then it would definitely pay to buy a car south, but if you have to go south specially to get a car then expenses will mount up to a lot more than you would think.

You will have to factor in time off work, boat fares, meals, hotels and transport to view any cars you are interested in, weather it be taxis, busses or a hire car. If you take the wife with you, expect that figure to sky rocket when she gets in about the shops.

You also have to try to schedule in time suitable with the seller, which can be a bit difficult when you plan looking at a lot of cars which might be spread out over a large unfamiliar area like Aberdeen, Glasgow, etc.

The last time i went to take my car south for a weekend, i couldn't get it back on the boat for over a week after i planned coming home (due to fully booked ferries), which would have left me car-less for a week and having to pay extra to ship the car up unaccompanied or stay south for an extra week until i could get the car on the ferry, which was not an option for me.

I ended up hiring a car, which was fine but it limited the quantity of stuff i could take home with me.

On a positive note, you will save a few pounds if you buy a car south and fill it up with fuel before you come home.

A lot of the cars from south can be in a lot better condition due to not being exposed to the weather that we get, but it is not always the case as a friend recently bought a car from Peterhead and i recon it must have spent most of its life sitting on a pier or very close to the sea, as it was very rusty underneath

Another advantage of buying a car from a dealer "South" is that it will have been properly prepared for sale. Namely, valeted, serviced, scratches & dings repaired etc, and will probably come with a superior warranty and a years MOT on it.

Most of the cars for sale at Shetland dealerships are anything but properly clean with many traces of the previous owner and his/her habits clearly evident. Interiors that reek of wet dog and fags abound, as do fag burns from careless smokers. The last car I bought south had belonged to a smoker, and the only reason I knew was because the dealer told me. he also pointed out where a fag burn had been "repaired" by a specialist. Again, unless I'd been told I wouldn't have seen it. Shetland dealers have to get their act together to compete on that basis.

Also, warranties aren't specific to a particular dealer, they are merely an insurance policy against breakdown that dealers are forced by law to provide. If something goes wrong you can have the car repaired anywhere and claim the cost back from the underwriter. The level of cover is usually linked to the age and mileage of the car.

Maybe I was lucky, bought a car from a dealer on his trust and got it delivered to Aberdeen without seeing it. Had been looking for a specific model for quite a while and a bargain came up, an ex demo at a bargain price. Bought it and never looked back, the garage were more than helpful and 100% honest. Even though they're in Bradford I'll look first at them again

Which garage was that in Bradford?
