Use of Classifieds by Professionals

Recommended Posts

I always thought that the Classifieds Ads Section of the website was for use by "non-professionals". I've used it a few times and try to donate a few squids via PayPal for doing so.

Lately, however, there seems to be more and more advertisements by "professionals". Now I know that Shetlink is run by volunteers and remember some time ago being advised that the advertisement facility was going through a re-design/overhaul so is that why so many "professionals" are using the Classifieds now?

I do hope that they are paying a fair contribution via PayPal!

As do we. Given the time constaints that we all operate under, the classified just get blitzed from time to time, and we welcome any reporting of commercial ads to us for deletion.

And, as you say, for the record, we do not accept or invite commercial ads in the classifieds section at this time and will delete any without warning. Same for those who break the 14 day rule. Please feel free to report users who abuse the system to us by PM and we will delete them too.

Thanks.

^ Err.. yeah; that's the advert I got permission for months ago, and had the 'Situations Vacant' category created specially because of.

Considering I do this moderation for nowt, I figure a bit of advertising space (my only one, so far as I recall) isn't much to ask... ;)

You'll notice that it says 'unauthorised' in the terms and conditions.

^^ Good grief, and by a Moderator too!

Seriously though, perhaps the Situations Vacant should carry a nominal charge? And if I see any more ads for plumbers/painters/decorators I'll probably scream - that said, it'll be just my luck to need a plumber and not find one ...

We lubs ya Mods but please update your advertising like you have said for over a year now you were doing.

I'm so gullible ;)

I agree that Shetlink classifieds could be improved in many ways. There are lots of features that I'd find very useful for keeping on top of things, and I often hear suggestions about what people would like. It's good to have ideas for improvement, but for time being such a scarce resource.

Hey unlinkedstudent, fancy donating several tens of G's + and we might consider not bothering with the day jobs and just do that ;)

Hey Trout, why not look through previous correspondence and see what I offered to do for ya!

My understanding of a "Situations Vacant" section is that it should only be used by people who are advertising an actual job vacancy, not by businesses to tout for work, which is what is happening on here.

There are a handful of people who have been abusing the system for a while now. However I don't charging for the use of the Situation Vacant section would make any difference as the people concerned will just post in a different section.

I am sure that the Moderators are doing their best to keep on top of the Classifieds section, but due to the success of the section and the amount of adverts being posted every day, it must be a time consuming job, as Fjool points out, an unpaid job at that.

All Shetlinkers could also help out a bit by sticking to the guidelines a bit better. Simple things like removing spent adds and using the search function could clean up the classifieds section and make life a little easier for everyone.

My only wish is people put a bit more effort into the description when trying to sell cars, Sadly I cant find it now but soemone who was selling a Seat Leon a month or so back had the perfect way of advertising, Including a link to the parkers guide etc.. I accept you dont need all that, but simple things like milage age etc are more important that colour of the mats in the footwells. :?

oh yeah i must add a job for these lazy mods :P a back button in the classified advert rather than just the homepage.... and dont worry trout I know fjool will slap me for you :P
