Patzel
how is the mobile phone coverage on the islands? Any chance that the phone works on the northern islands (Fetlar and Yell)? Or is it better to look for a phone box?
tins
of course we have mobile phone coverage... we not that deprived! also phone boxes can be few and far between!
MuckleJoannie
There is a whole thread on the subject here http://www.shetlink.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7602 Vodafone is reckoned to be the best in Shetland. You can check coverage using this site. http://online.vodafone.co.uk/mobile_services/mobile_network_coverage/Coverage_map_signal_strength_tester
Patzel
of course we have mobile phone coverage... we not that deprived! Well we are deep in deprived Southern Bavaria since I would have to drive about 4 km to get a signal for the mobile phone I am very confident now that my family will be able to reach me on the islands but they will have to use an ordinary phone ... living in deprived Bavaria
tins
Vodafone is reckoned to be the best in Shetland.Orange is probably better... it works nearly everywhere, you get it in all the places that 02 and Vodafone do work, and also all of the many places that 02 and Vodafone don't work! trooter
For the Northern Isles, Vodafone is the way to go. Orange is useless, unless in southend of Shetland.
tins
Ok, it might not be the best in the northern isles, but it does work in more than just the south end.. It works as far up as north roe, and that's about as far north as you can go on the mainland.
trooter
Original question asked about Yell and Fetlar, hence orange being no use.
Patzel
which provider is best is probably not so important as long as there is one. I suppose my Eplus will just book in what's available for roaming. I wouldn't even mind if there was no cover (being not a friend of radio masts everywhere) it's just that I would like to know before anyone at home goes crazy because they cannot reach me.If there is a poor coverage and one knows before it's possible to arrange something else... being complete clueness about modern technology: does the phone work on the North boat? I guess not...
MuckleJoannie
being complete clueness about modern technology: does the phone work on the North boat? I guess not... It works where you are near the coast and you are on a deck with windows looking out or out on deck.
Logie-Bear
Ok, it might not be the best in the northern isles, but it does work in more than just the south end.. It works as far up as north roe, and that's about as far north as you can go on the mainland. My mate has a contract phone with orange and hates it, no signal anywhere other than the south end. If he stands on the street he struggles to get 2 bars! Whit use is dat noo!

George.
Here in Hillswick, Vodafone claim there's a good signal - wonder how many more ridiculous claims they make
DizzyKipper
from the other topic, shows locations of the masts, don't know if it's any help here... http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/ Base stations show at the 500m scale but better zoomed into 100m. change the 'click' to base info and click on them for some info. George.
Thanks DizzyKipper This explains it - the nearest base station shown to me is, eh, hmmm, oh, gosh, Lerwick, where there are two base stations shown together. Nothing shown in Brea or anywhere else north of Lerwick. Why is there nothing more? Do people up around here not use mobiles or is the base station perhaps, just perhaps, too expensive per head of population in this area!!!
