I had a phone call yesterday from an exceptionaly poor english speaker, who tried to tell me that they needed to access my computer to check it for maintenance issues. When I started asking questions, they just hung up.

Today my elderly aunt had the same call, she could not understand them and when she just said I dont work with a computer, they said that she had a laptop. Noo she does, but its never been out of the box since it was bought 2 years ago. When she started to ask questions, they again just hung up.

I am assumming this is some sort of scam, so be carefull !!!

The number that came up on my phone was 018774273368

Be very careful, these guys have managed to scam hundreds of people. They tell you that ur pc or laptop has various viruses and they can fix it over the phone for only £25 they remotely access ur computer by getting you to type in ur password then they tell you it's worse than they thought and it may cost in the region for £100 to fix. All the while they ask for your card details for payment, clear out your account and rape your computer for any other passwords saved etc and the fraud spirals from there. They have then totally knackered your computer and it has to be paid for to get fixed by a specialist. Beware they are very fast talkers, both sets of parents fell for it DOH!

Yep, it's a scam. Just enter the number into google & it fetches up a whole list of complaints.

Thanks for that tip, I didnt know you could just enter a number in google and search!! Min you learn something every day on dis computers!

It's a pity that there are so many, who use it for the wrong purpose and try to scam folk. One post on the "who called me" site, stated that they had sent over 400 viruses to his computer and he was now getting more in an attempt to get him to buy there anti-virus software !

Yes I have had the same, a couple of times - one Asian lady was very insistent - I told her that I had a very good IT friend who would advise me. Next time I got a call from an Asian gentleman same very thick accent and I said I didnt have a PC, so he hung up.

My old folks got the same call. Except the caller actually claimed to be from Microsoft. Luckily I was at the house at the time, it's just the sort of thing Dad would fall for.

Got pretty much the same call yesterday (Monday).

Had some fun for 10 minutes, or so, before the guy hung up on me.

No problem, I didn't end my side of the call for about 30 minutes..

There is no getting away from these people anymore and they probably got your phone numbers from a company you trust. We were getting hounded by sales calls when we first moved to our new address here. We eventually registered not to receive sales calls etc with BT....a service they don’t exactly go out of their way to tell you about that we heard about from a friend. Although the number of calls dropped from half a dozen every day we still get a few every week. BT sells your number to anyone who wants a list of numbers to call unless you register not to have your number passed on. It was blatantly obvious it was them who passed on my details to the sales people because they miss spelled my surname badly when they set up my account and all the sales people & crank callers phoned up asking for this miss spelled name. We ended up buying an answer machine and screening all our calls. :x
