^^ Don't get me wrong, I supported, and support Thatcher for what she did, even if I didn't support most of her methods of achieving it.

There comes a time though, when such things should only live on in history. She had a good long reign at the top, and has had an even longer reign as an elder statesperson, its past time the population should still be expected to put up with her. She should at this stage be consigned to some well out of the way, shadowy corner, so she's out of sight and mind, until the appropriate time comes that her currently ongoing remnants can be suitably disposed of.

Doesn't she have grandchildren to play with, or something, to fill her day.

Thatcher is exactly the kind of person I support simply because it winds people up.

Do you mean support in a debate as a Devil's advocate? Or would you have voted for her if you were around at the time? Just being nosey...

Really? Personally I think she was an amazing woman, and usually I can get folks to agree with me, once they've got over there initial horror.

Given the choice between Thatcher and Blair, I know which I'd choose, but then I remember (amazingly enough considering the amount of alcohol involved) pleading with students not to vote Labour as they'd regret it, just a few weeks later they were.

You'd have to work on me for quite a bit I reckon.

Depends how you define 'amazing' - I'm equally amazed by Stalin and Pol Pot, but it doesn't mean I'd prefer them to Blair.

What's to be amazed by? Her reign over the destruction of Britain's manufactuing capacity? Depletion of publically owned housing stock? The miners? The growth in the divide between rich and poor? The poll tax? I could go on.

Her invitation and the omission of Blair and Brown from the invite list is a calculated slap in the face to the centre left from the old establishment.

^^ I'll give you the Poll Tax wasn't one of her more successfully schemes....it should have been, but something went badly awry between idea and reality, and the public housing stock was one half of a good idea, that became a bad idea, because it was just that, half of the whole.

Britain's manufacturing capacity, and the miners were the architects and perpetrators of their own demise though, she just chose to let their own suicidal plans and actions run their natural course. Instead of putting those industries in intensive care and trying to nurse them back to some form of health, very probably at an immense cost to public funds. Which we didn't have, and probably would have had a great deal of difficlty raising, as the nation had been taken to the brink of bankruptcy by some years of socialist government, just like they'd done again in the very recent past.

If you want to find the real culprits for the beginning of the very end of Britain's manufacturing and mining industries, you need to go back nearly a decade before Thatcher, and equal blame be apportioned to both right and left wing politicians. Tories took us in the the EEC, and Socalists kept us in, and in doing so, the floodgates of "economic union" immediately began to undercut our manufacturing and mining industries products with foreign imports. The end had begun much earlier though, with the nationalisation of those and other industries, if not even before that. Communism does not work in practice as it allows negative human traits on an individual level such as greed, laziness, and lack of responsibility to run rife. Nationalism was/is just micro-Communism, and no industry can survive indefinitely when workers demand more and more for doing less and less work to produce an end product of continually declining quality.
