Blue Peter Presenter Tastes Island Life. BBC2 Saturday 19th November at 12.25pm

 

On BBC2 tomorrow (Saturday 20 November), viewers can gain an insight into the lives of teenagers on Unst, Britain's most northerly inhabited island. Andy Akinwolere - the Blue Peter presenter and a self-confessed city lover - recently spent a week there to find out what life is like for young people. His journey begins in London and involves two flights, a two-hour drive and two ferry trips.

 

Unst stretches for about twelve miles from north to south and it's roughly five miles across at its widest point. The island has a state-of-the-art leisure centre with an excellent pool and there are regular events in local public halls. There are three shops and a post office. However, the nearest clothes shops are in Lerwick, Shetland's capital, which is about two hours away by road, with two ferry crossings en route. Unst's junior high school takes students to their fourth year of secondary education. If they want to continue into a fifth and sixth year, they need to live in Lerwick during the week to attend the secondary school there.
