kax
Does anyone know if it's possible to buy fireworks in Shetland for a new year?
trooter
Try Harry's or Frank Williamsons. There was an advert on SIBC today about fireworks for New Year but i wasn't paying much attention.

I thought it was illegal to let off fireworks now in a public place unless at an organised public display - or is that just legislation for England & Wales? Far Haaf
Most of the civilised world has now successfully managed to ban fireworks. Although it's a shame that government legislation is finding it harder to deal with suicide bombers. But governments only deal with things which are easy to fix. Explosive devices, sure, but nothing wrong wi a good old sky rocket ta see in the new year, indeed decade in this case. As for the poor little animals, it may make up in some small way for those terrorised, even mauled or killed by so called "pets" every year.... Far Haaf
I'm fairly sure that when it comes to fireworks, there are very few posters on this forum who would see anything wrong with a rocket if it was aimed properly at the butt of their least favourite councillor.A naughty thought, but satisfying nevertheless. Colin
J W Gray keep fireworks although, AFAIK, you will need some kind of 'Trade' account to buy them. Try phoning them.

Noodeyn
What about sky lanterns, we are setting off a few at new year but I'm sure I read on here a while back that the coastguard needs to be advised of this?
MuckleJoannie
Yes you did here. From this news story http://www.shetland-news.co.uk/2010/January/news/In%20brief%20-%208%20January%202010.htm Lantern alert SHETLAND coastguard yesterday (Thursday) reminded people setting off Chinese lanterns into the sky to let them know, in case they are mistaken for flares. The call came after the Lerwick lifeboat was called out after a red flare was seen over Mousa on Wednesday evening around 6.30pm. Nothing was found at the scene, but on their way back at 10pm the lifeboat crew saw several Chinese lanterns over Brei Wick, off Sound.
