Frances144
Any stories? Anyone know anything? I want to record what is left and get an idea of what was there. (I live at the end of the track of the main part and all I see is rubble and vague foundations)
RileyBKing
I believe RAF Watsness was one of the Chain Home Low radar stations giving early warning of aircraft attack, so there should be quite a lot of info available. I think the radars would have been smaller than the towers of Battle of Britain fame. Hope this helps!
Frances144
I found lots of info about the Chain Home Low aspect but very little on actual RAF Watsness or Wats Ness. Anyone got any photos of when it was up and working?
RileyBKing
Just a thought, when we were working on displays for the Nesting Hamefarin exhibition last year .we obtained large scale aerial reconnaisance photos from the Amenity Trust. These date from just after the war, I think 1946 & 48, they are being used as part of the place names project. If Walls is covered then this would hopefully show you what was at Watsness before it was demolished/dismantled. It would help interpret whatever remains? MuckleJoannie
I suspect you will be unlikely to find many photos taken during wartime as it was forbidden to take photos of the military. My copy of this book is somewhere in the loft so I can't say if it would help you but the library has it. http://www.amazon.co.uk/North-Atlantic-Front-Northern-Isles/dp/1843410117
shetlandpeat
The military did take pictures of the whole country during WWII. You can find some of them at The Imperial War Museum. It may be good for the Shetland Museum Archives to get recent pics before the remains do blend in.
