 a group of grown men dressed up as some sort of effeminate camp hommage to vikings, looking and sounding beyond ridiculous, how they qualify to call anyone an idiot  it's a laughing stock, a joke to the rest of the world

The crowds that were visible around the town through the day and at the procession at night along with the attendances at all the halls this year would make me think your comment is maybe just your own opinion and not the opinion shared by many others.

Cheers

Agreed Styumpie!! How do these slavering, balding, pot-bellied red-necks think they really look on a national stage burping their Hip-hip-hurrahs when they are rolled out as embassadors for Shetland?

Regarding the Bill business, coming from Unst I got my share of 'country bumpkin/ village idiot' treatment during my stint at the AHS and I read this as sad testament to the mentality that exists in the toon, sadder still coming from adults aimed at children. I read it several times trying to find something that may have eluded me, but alas, I can only see an offensive comment composed and posted with no comprehension of banter (far less satire), completely devoid of intellect, humour or wit. But then again, it was written by a 'toonie' so what can you expect? Sorry if I have offended anyone here, but you hardy toon vikings proclaim to get what you axe for.

This is probably getting away from the OP but this happens all over Shetland now with both women and men taking part in processions, halls and acts.

I wouldn't be sure of numbers involved but I bet over the year there must be 3-4000 (conservative guess) people who get involved in some way or another all over the isle, not just a bunch o toonies getting 'pissed' and having a 'good' time but people from outlying areas too!

UHA/Fire Festivals are a community event now like it or not!

Cheers

I've kept out of this because I think it is just 'a storm in a teacup' but, there is nothing that irritates me more than some not very smart people trying to make smart comments for public consumption.

IMHO, the offending line on the bill was crass at best and not funny to anyone. Take a pop at people who can respond if you must but, leave the kids out of it.

It is also worth noting that the 'village idiots' have a higher all round educational achievement rate than the kids at the AHS.

But Colin is funnier!

Maybe all our bairns would have higher all round educational achievement rates if there was a more equitable distribution of educational resources in Shetland.

I think everyone on here just moan's and cant get over a joke! Why does everyone take it out on the Lerwick Up Helly Aa? Whats your problem? The bill is just a bill just get over it! :x

I think that the problem is that Lerwick UHA is no longer a 'local' event and attracts attention from far outside Shetland. The bill is no longer just for local consumption.

Good natured banter is an art but some people's idea of a joke(?) only serves to show the level at which they operate. Just the kind of people you want to foster international relations... Not.

As I said earlier, take a pop at people who deserve it and are capable of reply. Leave the kids out of it.

Are you not all taking yourselves a little too seriously?

Don't be silly Henry, no one on Shetlink takes themselves seriously, it's all just a big joke! :D

Can't say I'm surprised to see these latest posts here. Shetlink seems to be a voice for the morally correct and sanctimonious people that just want to sit at the confindes of their computer and criticise all things Shetland.

I have spoken to so many people over the last few days that absolutely loved everything about last Tuesday/Wednesday, not one person has mentioned the part of the bill that this thread relates to, what a surprise to see people picking holes in it here!!

Take it for the fun its meant to be wether thats toilet, political humour or anyother bloody humour. As someone else earlier said, there's plenty worse written on bills throughout Shetland and I'm sure there will be more.

Get a bloody grip, picking on schoolchildren, FFS, how dramatic and misconstrued is that?

PS Sorry about the poor spelling and maybe not so articulate post, I was taught in a 'toonie' school!

Cheers

Me no! I am just a village idiot. Nobody can take me seriously least of all myself :?

Going completly of the point here, an idiotic little tangent of irony, I seem to recall that most of the headmasters and teachers at the AHS were village idiots too. What exactly is my point here? Can any other idiots shed some light? If only my world had been that vast grand metropolis that exists between Solotti's and da Fort Chippy I would have been able to express myself or get the joke. Now, here's a challenge to a non-idiot... explain it to me!

Would love to talk more, but on a serious note, some hens just got into the kitchen... and I gotta go and shoo them back into the livingroom!
