turrifield
With reports of anti-salmon protests planned do you support the protests or the salmon farming industry?
Styles
I support the industry. Sure there are a few cowboys, but most of those are now out of the industry now thankfully. But these few have given it a bad name at times. I dont know why salmon farming gets such a hard time when it is far better than most other forms of farming such as chicken etc. Chemicals are at a minimum and only used if necessary for the fishs health. Salmon Farming provides many rural high paying jobs, most sites are sited in the most rural locations. It is a very of important part of the Shetland economy. There is that birds eye (think its them) advert saying about wild salmon they use and how farmed has colouring in it. I think if you looked at most packets and tins of food you would discover they have colouring! So whats the big deal. people would not eat it if it was not the same colour as wild salmon. Just a pity most companies now are ultimatley owned by Norwegians.
Waddersty
The idiot on the Birds Eye advert is a perfect example of the rubbish spouted about salmon farming in recent years. I agree as above that there have been cowboys and incidents but the most part of that is history. In the advert they speak of adding the chemical Astaxanthin to pigment the flesh whereas in the wild it comes from crustaceans. The colour in the crustaceans is also from Astaxanthin and so is exactly the same as that added to salmon feed. I used to work in the industry and it has comea long way in the last 7 or 8 years and is very heavily regulated and audited by government agencies and by their customers. Compared to many food industries, aquaculture is something we should be proud of.
turrifield
I don't support salmon farming it is an unsustainable food production system one that uses 4-5 tons of fish(in feed) to produce 1 ton of salmon. Most of the fish caught to make feed comes from poor countries where the fish could be used as food rather than as a cash crop. It also uses chemicals to control disease an concentrates fish feces on the sea bed under the cages. If people eat wild caught fish these problems do not occur. I don't support any fish farming by not buying their products.
Njugle
In an ideal world fish-ranching is the best option, realeasing smolts in to the sea then harvesting them on return, but unfortunately, man (nor seal) cannot be trusted to leave them alone during this time, not in Scotland anyway, it would probably work in Scandinavia. I think environmentally managed fish farming is acceptable though. The pity here is that the industry was let loose with few guidelines to follow and ever since the environmental agency has been 'reigning them in'. It's a lot better now that it was. In contrast, eg. Australia set all the rules first and then supported the farmers in complying with them.
