Muppet
They now are left with the options of attempting to hadd in until they get as far as Grantfield, I'm pretty sure the Grantfield toilets were closed as well as the Lochside ones. Ghostrider
^^ If that is the case, I'm not going to hold back saying it any longer. Maybe if they'd made do with the old Esplanade toilets (after all was there anything really "wrong" with them?), and not spent such an absurd sum on what they have now, maybe they'd be in a better situation to be able to actually afford to allow folk to use all of them. If they'd closed and demolished the old Esplanade ones, and not built new, chances are we'd likely be 50% better off today, we'd probably still have had two facilities, Lochside and Grantfield, as it is we only have one from the three. I can only hope that should any of our councillors have eaten a dodgy curry, that they find themselves driving along Lochside when nature insists on taking its course. Then they may begin to appreciate their own stupidity.

Colin
What strikes me as being particularly stupid about these closures is that no one in authority seems to have considered the needs of the public beforehand. Just an across the board cost cutting exercise designed to appease the 'masters'. The toilet at Grantfield was not well used so, OK it was up for the chop but, the one at Lochside was well used and anyone with a little wit would have realised that closing it would be a serious nuisance to the travelling public. Perhaps we should all meet there some morning and simultaneously pee on the road in protest... I didn't know that there was a toilet up on the Knab so, go figure. If the SIC really wanted to save money, why not make the person(s) responsible for 'watching over' (sitting down doing next to nothing for most of the day is hardly a 'Job' is it) the toilets at the Viking Bus Park responsible for the brand new and shiny edifice opposite the pier as well. It might nor save any/much money but it will be a much more cost efficient way of justifying someone's employment.
MuckleJoannie
Maybe if they'd made do with the old Esplanade toilets (after all was there anything really "wrong" with them?) The LPA are now busy digging up the site of the old toilets, presumably so they can put up the visitor centre for visiting cruise ships that was planned for the site a while ago. I think you will find that they have put up a disabled toilet there Malcolm.May be they have to provided a disabled one by law these days. Maybe it is a health and safety thing?Someone has done a time and motion study. A man from the council, has been watching with glasses counting the number of users in and out.Is there a right angle that one has to drop ones pants at.Or to avoid a bad back. lifting a piece of toilet paper. MitzyMu
Just my penny worth. Unfortunately my life is revolved round knowing where public loos are and that they are open, and living some considerable distance from Lerwick, so to close any loos around Shetland would be a great inconvenience Parden the pun !!!But once again no one is thinking of the bigger picture , I agree that cuts need to be made but to sacrifice public loos is very short sighted when thousands are being wasted on non essentials or pie in the sky ideas. Public means just that and as a resident paying full council tax it seems idiotic IMHO. When you're playing a sport or spectating wandering all over the place to find another loo could be one step too far !!! And what about our visitors who literally follow the signs to the loo nearest to their needs. Not a good advert for tourists.Another great b.... up by our council. Can't say any more I'm getting too cross.
JustMe
Hang on a minute - did someone say that the toilets on the Esplanade aren't open all that late on Friday & Saturday?? Can anyone confirm what time they ARE open until at the weekend? It's just that, if you are a Wheelchair user, and you go to a Wedding or function in the Lerwick Hotel, and you need to use the loo, they get you a Taxi down to the Public Toilets as they don't have a wheelchair-accessible loo there, so it would be handy to know in advance how late one would be able to bide at the wedding if the Public loos close early... Miss 'Auld Lang Syne', I doobt? So, theoretically speaking, could a wheelchair user get done for peeing in a bottle / portable urinal in the Lerwick Hotel car park? Be a bit awkward to try & aim for your car wheel... especially if you're female I can confirm that the esplanade toilets are closed at midnight 7 days a week. JustMe
And something is indeed happening in Shetland that I don't like and it must be the council's fault!. Yes seriously it must be as if they are closing public toilets surely they ought to update the list of toilets as shown on their website. Yes indeed, there is such a list.
