Njugle
I've just heard that a scheme is being launched to set up Shetland as a "no doorstep sales zone", with door stickers and signposts planned to deter salesmen. Fair enough. But realistically, is this a big problem up here? I can't recall ever having a salesman at the door, and i don't now, nor ever have, live out in the sticks on an island or anywhere particularly out of the way. The Jehovahs call regularly, put it that way. So do we actually have a problem worthy of a campaign with these people? And also, "Kleeneze" and similar schemes are beyond reproach are they not? Good products at good prices i would say, but is door to door cataloguing not a form of door to door sales? So where does that stand? What next? What think ye? Any horror stories? Been ripped off on the doorstep? NB this scheme has no legal footing anyway, and does not pretend to.

I had a kleeneze catalogue delivered last week, followed by another this week from a different salesperson. Cant remember when I saw a door to door salesman last. Sam
ot in lerwick but i think the country people still get them - then they are the churches that pester the lerwick - thats a difrent thread altogether
Mario
I can't remember the last time somebody sent a door to door salesperson to my gaff. On the door to door 'spread the word' religious types, last time it happened to me it was two rather pleasant lasses. I say we should see more of this. Really though - door to door isn't really a problem. Not in Lerwick anyway. I do think there is a need for a "no doorstep drunk neighbour zone" however. LondonBob
Funny when i was living in Shetland, we had mormons living next door to us but they never doorstepped us. I wonder why? (could have been the threats of verbal abuse of even worse, the occasions when we said yes and did their head in when they tried to talk religon!). Never really had problems since them.

Fifi
Years ago I had the Indian 'gentleman' who came with his car stuffed with cra... clothes. He more or less pushed his way in and I, uncharacteristically, let him spout forth for a while. When I said I didn't want anything, he insisted in getting more stuff from his car, despite my protestations. He came back in and I told him to go as I really did not want anything and hadn't invited him in. His manner changed dramatically, he got quite nasty and he said he would put a curse on me and my family forever. Yeah right.

He used to target my dad who had been in India during the war, so he used this as an excuse for his sales patter. A couple of moths ago I reported a gentlman from Lanarkshire who was going around Brae selling stuff and claiming it was for charity. He had a permit that clearly stated that he was not a charity collector! I got him to admit that he made a donation to some charity I had never heard of but he produced no evidence. JustMe
This has been a problem........a few years back there was a case of people selling doddgy goods (generators?) that were stopped at the ferry and made to give refunds. And some of these people do target the old and vulnerable which in my book makes them despicable. Just watch something like "Rogue Traders" to see some of the tricks people will use to make money. Although there is not much law behind the "ban" it may serve to discourage some rogues and the high profile may help save others from being ripped off. Njugle
I think i mind dem an'aa. They used to go round work-places touting for trade and would show you a folder of all the people here that had signed up and what they had claimed. Pretty dodgy sales technique. Den dey would get you to suggest other places for them to go that they might sell something. Was one of the latter ones a big ex army rugby dude? I'm no peerie, but it was hard no to feel slightly intimidated by a guy the size o a bus insisting you tell him other places to try for business. petergear
This isn't strictly the same thing, but is sort-of related.... I find junk-mail, telesales and junk fax incredibly annoying. Like door-to-door sales, it is an unsolicited intrusion on your "personal time". If you want to do something to stop yourself being subject to it, you can register with the Mail Preference Service, and/or the Telephone Preference Service, and/or and the Fax Preference Service, all from links on the website below: http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/ It doesn't stop it all, but it stops most of it. Takes about two minutes of brief form-filling. Really works. Great!
