Fifi
Sent to John Reid - http://www.shetland-news.co.uk/pages/news%20stories/06_2006/immigration_cops_grab_shetland_man.htm Dear Mr Reid, Shetland has been shocked and stunned to hear of the early morning raid by mainland police and the arrest and swift removal of Sakchai Makao. Satch is 23 years old and has lived in our community for 13 years. He came here as a child and was at the same school as my children. He has integrated well and is a popular and useful member of the community, working at the Leisure Centre in Lerwick and he has been an excellent athlete, representing Shetland at the Nat West Island Games on various occasions. He was aiming to train youngsters and pass on his athletic skills. He made one silly mistake by getting drunk one night and, as a result, spent a short time in prison for arson. This was a totally uncharacteristic silly act on Sakchai's behalf, drunken behaviour with a friend. Although most locally thought his sentence harsh, he accepted the sentence and did his time. On his return to Shetland he was given his job back and has been a model citizen, extremely well liked by everyone. We cannot believe how this can happen. Were deportation papers served on Sakchai previously? Is this the way things are now done in our country? That someone is woken by their door being kicked in at 7am and they are taken away, mobile phone taken from them and not allowed to contact anyone - family or solicitor?? We are told he only has 5 days to make an appeal before he is deported to Thailand, where he has no family and would struggle with the language, having come to the UK at 10 years of age. The local community got together immediately and a lawyer qualified in immigration matters is being appointed and a petition has been started. Their is a local forum - www.shetlink.co.uk - where the shock felt by the community is palpable. Our local MP, Alistair Carmichael is with the community on this issue and going to do everything he can. The very least that Sakchai deserves is a fair hearing. Many people, many ordinary working Scots, who have voted Labour all their lives, are now wondering what the hell is going on with this government and thinking it is perhaps time they are voted out at the next election. mutopian
I personally don't know Sakchai, but the current labour regime and their foot soldiers really have reached a new low. As has been pointed out he's been in full-time employment, played an active role in his community and more importantly paid taxes and he's rewarded by a dawn raid and being treated like petty criminal. I hope for his & his family's sake this can be resolved quickly and he's returned back here as soon as possible.
thingomy
This whole matter seems completly unaceptable, I only hope that the government see sense and stop this mess before it's too late.
Richie
Smeg is right i reckon. A demonstration in the town would really show the support we all have for Sakchai if it could be arranged. Its too short notice for the moment probably. Today would have been the best day for it as there should be coverage on the Scottish News tonight but as I said too short notice. Keep up the support! Lets bring Satch home for good!
McFly
I'm shocked and apalled. It's quite incredible that a young man's life can be ruined for the sake of creating statistics that will impress Sun readers. Everyone, please do e-mail the relevant contacts, as well as posting on here.
tarotangel
Just a quick thought which I'm sure someone is in the middle of doing but has anyone been in touch with the media? Normally not a big fan of the mainstream media but maybe it might help? Mabye if we bombarded them with emails as well they might bump it up the rankings instead of being third last on the list. smeg
richie the only thing we need is numbers. Now between 1pm-2pm the schools are out. Sakchai is well liked in the AHS with all the swimming he does ect. We could easy get a few hundred if the word is put about early enough. Like i said before we need to act really fast to get reconition throughout scotland and perhaps britain if we play our cards right. Try phoning SIBC and they might be able to put the word out on the radio. keep the ideas comming... plus its a nice day folk are out and might even join up with us. jorvik
My son, I think, was the only person that Sakchai managed to contact before his phone was confiscated. Hopefully he has triggered a nationwide objection to the government's recent knee-jerk reaction to departmental failures! It now appears that we have to treat him just like a murderer. Sakchai must be returned home to Shetland amongst all his friends without delay. He is to be my son's Best Man shortly!
