Doomsday Project in Shetland

I mind the teacher showing us this in Sound Primary School, back in the 80s.

We weren't allowed to use the actual BBC computer and daren't touch the hallowed "Video Discs" that stored "more information than a million phone books!"

Now, apparently, the BBC Website is letting any old punter use it!

Quite a lot about Shetland on there. Kinda like an old-school Shetlopedia... ;)

Excellent find. I remember it well, as well as the laserdisc burner that went around with it.

Looking through some of the entries I do wonder if one of them is mine but I did find this bit particularly amusing:-

There are approximately 16 army

personell staying in our area. Some of

their work is done at the Early

Warning Station to the north of our

area. The rest of their work is done

at their social club.

Don't know how much "work" went on at the Social Club!

Design and Technical Services at that time was made up of Architects, Quantity Surveyors, Design Engineers, Clerks of Works and Admin support staff.

That department no longer exists, however I would estimate there are less than 35 existing SIC staff employed who would come under Design and Tech if it existed now. That's at least a 36% reduction ;)
