Shetland's broken society.

What it needs is for the folks in the housing dept to grow a pair and do the same as the housing dept in Aberdeen and tell folk with no connection to the isles to piss off and find their own accommodation, It needs the councillors to grow a pair and put junkies in homeless hostels with a warden and a curfew not the hostel at ladies drive which should be kept for first level of the housing ladder working single folk.

Stop giving junkies and all other wasters houses that they proceed to wreck.

Agreed. Plus theres a clear distinction between Shetland and scotland , primarily a lot of miles of sea, and a totally different society structure. Horse on and muck it up , it wont work

drug test council house applicants if you can afford drugs you can afford private rent, simple really when you grow a pair and implement a bit of common sense

housing policy already allows for eviction of drug dealers but they dont even have a pair big enough to deal with that, instead they give dealers houses across from the primary school. go figure

So many "whys" above.

Let turdland be that bit different.

Invite (or insist) that wir local "problem" dealers set up a stall on da esplanade during the tall ships to sell all their wares so that the world can see that we are truly cosmolpolitan and we accept EVERYONE.

If you want turd then turdland is the place to come. Be proud the fact that we can adapt to all comers. Calling our friends "Druggies"or "Wasters" is certainly not the answer. It sounds too much like "Da Baptists" , "Da Methodists, Da Barstewards, Dem damn Clapp Happy's, Da Fuzz, Da Community Wardens, Da Weather, Dat Damn Ash Clood, etc.

Get a grip

well you see you cant stop housing these wasters because its a legal requirement unfortunatlely, to take youre attatude of throw them all on the street is going to the level of a third world country,

the problem is that junkies/alcoholics are deemed to be incapable of handling themselves so without social housing they would end up on the streets begging the young hard working typed

Obviously amno has an opinion - it makes no sense and is hardly socially acceptable - but it's his/her opinion.

I know i dont have all the answers george im not just going to sit and say line them all up and shoot them take a hard stand agaisnt them like some people are doing on here why because it doesnt work!!!!!!

neither does the softly softly approach but all anyone seems to have suggested is the polar opposite

Blame everything on the scottys if you want but good luck trying to solve any real problems mate

Theres a lot more to breaking Shetlands society than just our scottish neighbours or drugs or any of a handfull of things , theres many many factors. Shetlanders themselves have a deplorable habit of taking the most deviant creatures in for tea n biscuits and being incredibly 2 faced to them on the totally misguided belief it will gain them safety. Other parts of the country we look down are kinda places where the folk will say "you're a wrong un" and drive them out , forcably if needs be. Right or wrong, if it works .....

certinly a good point there when it comes to devient creature theres no point in being 2 faced being cruel is about the kindest thing you could do for them

in this instance we agree , local folk (of whom i am one) are very spineless, gutless and 2 faced when it comes to addressing deviants in the greater extent. KIPPERS

Shetland is no different to any other place in the UK:

A more fluid society that will think nothing of moving to the other end of the country, increased awareness of the problems of 'social housing' (read dumping ground) for ne'er do wells - thus upsetting the decent folk who are already there, accusations of 'incomers' being to blame, increased levels of crime, media hype playing to our base fears, shifting society values that place less on community and more on self, the ineptness of the Local authority/Social services/Plod.....the list goes on.

Get a map of the UK - stick a pin in it and the nearest town to your pin will be no different.
