oddsandends
Been hearing through the grape vine that a few guys have come from south and been searching for scrap metals in Shetland. Also been told that they have been distracting people with a bit of patter while they steal the scrap from under their noses. Please don't get sucked in and keep using local scrap dealers (*mod edit - can anyone back this claim?*)

As it stands , rather than attracting predators to the brigstanes or hauling stuff to Lk for pennies it leaves the dumping option

MJ
(*mod edit - can anyone back this claim?*) The Northern Constabulary website? unfortunately the Shetland RSS feed isn't working so you'd need to trawl through, but it was there on Friday. daveh
There are loads of rusting old cars, old vans and old tractors lying around; all being a horrible blot on the landscape. It would be good if these guys could cart all that lot away with them. crofter
Sorry Dave, but I am storing all my scrap until I retire. Better than money in the bank.

Reliant Robins stayed around for ages, well they are made from fiberglass. There used to be an old tractor at the top near Hoofields, as it became more rounder, it blended in. It did look the part. Though some may not. Sadly, it would not be worth the scrap value, you will not get a good price for ferrous on the Isles if any. The scrap yard near the dump pay nothing for ferrous. They will be looking for copper, brass, lead and perhaps aluminium, though that too can be pricey to transport due to the bulk.
MaxFusion
^they've actually been paying for old cars and ferrous for some time SP. Also a neighbour had some people from south enquiring about scrap, whilst one enquired the other scouted round and took a load of copper he had stored and paid a lot less than he'd have got locally! shetlandpeat
Maybe since August 2010, cos that is when I took about 3/4 of a tonne.
beachcaster
Maybe since August 2010, cos that is when I took about 3/4 of a tonne. August 2010 is a long time ago. 60 North has been bought by new owners since then, and they have started paying better prices than the last owner. Might be better if you check your facts before posting, especially since you don't live in Shetland and are probably not aware of a lot of local news.
