sharalee99
Travel advice for Loganair flights Tuesday 24th May RE: Ash Cloud For tomorrow, Tuesday 24 May, the volcanic ash forecasts issued by the Met Office this afternoon indicate that a high density of ash will be present in large parts of Scottish airspace. As a result of this, we have taken the decision to cancel all services with the exception of our inter-isles flights in Orkney. All flights due to depart between 06:00 and 13:00 hrs tomorrow have therefore been cancelled. You should not travel to the airport and if you are booked on a flight departing tomorrow afternoon, you should check the website for further updates before setting out for the airport. http://www.loganair.co.uk/loganair/press-office/111/travel-advice-for-23-/-24-may

JustMe
This is just another situation where the airline is damned if it cancels flights but is completely ostracised if it operates flights and has a crash. Only thing I am left wondering is why they cannot operate a shuttle service to Orkney flying at a very low level so people can still get to and from Shetland. Seaflech
It's not so much that they are damned if they do, damned if they don't, but that if they were to operate into known ash contamination then they would be breaking the law and invalidating their insurance policies. There is not a risk of crashing if a plane flies through the ash cloud, more that it could lead to progressive and unknown damage to the engines. As both engines are flying through the same air for the same amount of time, this could increase the likelihood of failure further down the line. This would prove quite inconvenient if both motors decided to expire at the same time....... Some airlines have consulted with the aircraft and engine manufacturers to get approval to operate into higher concentrations of ash, (mainline flybe is one), but it will be with the proviso that engine inspections are done at frequent intervals to check for contamination or damage. Looking at the forecast, Shetland appears to be getting light contamination in the air between sea level and 20,000ft from mid morning; http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/volcano/public/natlantic.html Shuttling people to Orkney wouldn't really achieve much, just that potential travellers would be stuck in Orkney rather than Shetland. JustMe
Seaflech wrote Shuttling people to Orkney wouldn't really achieve much, just that potential travellers would be stuck in Orkney rather than Shetland. Not quite. Orkney has a choice of ferries going to the mainland throughout the day where wimps can catch buses and trains heading to Inverness for connections to the world and the brave can drive south on the A9. MuckleJoannie
According to the Shetland News Loganair organised extra flights tonight http://www.shetnews.co.uk/news/745-loganair-cancels-all-flights.html LOGANAIR has cancelled all its flights for Tuesday between 6am and 1pm due to the high density of volcanic ash expected to be in the Scottish airspace. tojo
Does anyone know of any confirmed cancellations for tomorrow (Wed 25th May)? Nothing is showing up on Loganair website, yet shetnews says that the early flights to both Glasgow and Edinburgh have been cancelled? Can anyone confirm? I tried to contact Flybe/Loganair, but they are currently only receiving calls for todays cancelled flights.
i i
The only confirmed cancellation is flight BE6992 to Edinburgh which was due to depart at 0740. All other services are expected to operate as normal. Shetland news website is deceiving and flight BE6912 to Glasgow departing at 1210 has NOT been cancelled. Check http://www.loganair.co.uk for live flight information.
