^^ Each to their own by all means, but the sight of folk dressed as "Vikings" and as "Scotsmen" milling around together afterwards was, to my eye and mind, rather bizarre and surreal. It leant an almost comedic visual to things, kinda like if you met Luke Skywalker and Barney Rubble walking along side by side.

... an almost comedic visual to things,...

Not just "almost" comedic I would say, but very comedic. Kind of the point of it all I reckon.

... rather bizarre and surreal....

Surely the highlight in that department had to be the lilac pony with the gold glittery painted hoofs. An absolute masterpiece. Best thing I've seen in ages. Any photos?

Surely no more bizarre than the whole Up Helly Aa festival and it's adopted Viking heritage?

I think Up Helly Aa is a perfect demonstration of Shetlands heritage - Shetlanders like a good excuse to party hard and long, as well as an excuse to dress up and parade around in public, regardless whether it's as a Viking or Pamela Anderson in a striking red bikini

And yes I've done both....

That to me is Shetland's culture - a unique mix of Scotland and Nordic. There's no where else in the world quite like it. It's how our flag came about afterall!

Well. I didna like to slag off two main events on the toon spree calendar in one post. ....but yes, Carnival and UHA are two variations on the same theme.

I wouldn't have thought you had the..... errrrr..... legs for it.

Evidently I didn't, I got to be a comic character from a TV Ad for tea, and a..... ummmm..... Policeman.

I quite enjoyed the carnival again this year. I would love to take part like I used to when I was little! I loved being Alice on the Alice in wonderland one like 18+ years ago!

Also the kids playing the steel drums very good as they have been in previous years! Im hoping there is going to be all this type of stuff at the tall ships too?

Why, Master Rider, I am surprised! I would have thought The Man With No Name or Cool Hand Luke would have been more your calling?

Still, one imagines you would have been easy to spot, as the "Officer" whose face glowed brighter than his torch. :D

^^ In my defence, I think I was only 12 at the time. Plus I had no say in the squad theme, somehow somebody managed to talk me in to doing it at the 11th hour as they were shortnumbered.

I think it must have been the only occasion I ever succumbed to peer pressure.

Speaking of events for visitors, has anything been laid on for the yacht race crews currently in Lerwick? I was reliably told today that this was the 25th year of them coming and many of them had encouraged wives and family to come too, because it is usually an extravaganza, and believed to be more so in its anniversary and then.........nothing. No marquees, no bands. Nowt. Resources had all been diverted to the Tall Ships.

Is this true?

Yep, unfortunately so. The 25th year and nothing on the pier. Hopefully it'll be back to normal next year - these Norskies certainly spend a lot when they're here so let's encourage them to come back!
