shetlandpeat
Hey, even if it's a load of bull.. who cares?Well I do for one, and I would recommend that it would be better if you did too. Your response is interesting in that you seem quick to react to what you consider an insult, yet fail to see how damaging your glib allegation is to the business in question. Would you be so "whatever" if your livelihood was being attacked? Are we not all having a bit of a comical approach to this topic?!No. I am sure this may be taken further, you may now have lost your friend their job. And a friend. blablabla
I'm employed by the golden coach and have been employed by the company now for 5 years. DO NOT worry, this information will make its way to management about rumours from their part time staff... cos all of their part time kitchen staff are school children....? and seriously? pigeon instead of beef? get a grip! the golden coach is one of the best chinese meals i have ever tasted, and not just in shetland, i mean country wide. maybe i'm biased. but if i worked there and knew of seagull being cooked, i wouldnt be working there, or eating their food. hillarious. JustMe
The story concerning seagull and the Golden Coach does seem to come up once in a while. Inclined to think it is complete rubbish and surely the Trading Standards and Environmental Health people would have investigated and found the story to be groundless. It would of course be illegal to serve seagull when calling it chicken. But would it be legal to serve seagull described as seagull?.
Ghostrider
If, as I suspect, the meat of a seagull is like any bird flesh I've ever tasted that spent some of its life eating from the sea, it has a very characteristic flavour. There is absolutely no chance of seagull flesh being used as a replacement for some other flesh, as the strength of flavour of only a very small amount would taint everything else, and give the game away. EM
But would it be legal to serve seagull described as seagull?.I expect it would be fine from a food legislation point of view if they were farmed, but sourcing them from the wild would be a no-no. Remarkable as it may seem, they are red listed and consequently quite strongly protected. Apparently, although their numbers in urban areas has rocketed, overall they are considerably down. Unfortunately there are a lot of ignorant folk around who's mouths works long before the brain is engaged I have tasted seagull many years ago and Ghostrider is right you would know it was not chicken. So don't believe any of the daft rumours.
manxman
Something-else-masquerading-as-meat is a rather old and racist cliché concerning Chinese restaurants, but it has actually happened to me. At a quite expensive eaterie over here (now thankfully closed), I had sweet-and-sour chicken that, instead of chicken, contained… actually, I'm not 100% sure what it was, but my nearest guess would be some sort of tripe from a pig or sheep. I never went back out of principle, which is a shame as the rest of the banquet was very good.
shetlandpeat
Many food take aways have diversified their meat stock. The sausage is the one to watch.
