owre-weel
Did I see correctly as I passed Leasks that Deisel has jumped up to 153.9p ? Noo I was just about to post saying I had noticed they were the first to drap da price by 2p. but then they go and raise it by 4p. I cant write how I feel about this. Do these folk no have any consideration of the effect this is having on elderly people who rely on the car for essentials, hospital, visiting and getting oot!!. They should hang thier heads in shame as they head to the bank to deposit the takings. No doubt they don't have to live on a small pension. I read that it costs less then a penny extra to get fuel to Shetland, so how can they justify 20 + pence extra? It is really about time these elected people did something about this rediculous situation and earned the high wages they get, instead of constantly talking about it. They are nithin but bags o hot air !

They are nithin but bags o hot air !What exactly can they do?. Subsidise the fuel?. Yes but that will not force the suppliers to lower their prices. Make noises about a monopoly?. Yes but there is nothing to stop another company setting up its own distribution system. Tell them the tanks in Lerwick have to be moved?. Yes but there is nothing to say that the company has to continue to supply fuel to Shetland. Basically we have one company prepared to supply us and they can more or less charge what they like. Check out the price that the rest of the UK pays for fuel and work out the justification.

marlin13
The Aywick shops prices are a lot lower than Lerwick. I think diesel was either 1.47 or thereabouts yesterday and was around 1.53 at a major lerwick outlet. If they can sell fuel in Yell 6p or so a litre less than Lerwick I leave the conclusions to you. Styumpie
Yes but there is nothing to stop another company setting up its own distribution system. We probably could as a community look into setting up a non-profit limited company/association, initially put together by volunteers, call it something like the fuel users alliance. Apply for startup grants/cheap loans, when setup import fuel from wherever is cheapest in Europe, Limit profits to only cover company running costs so all our local outlets can buy fuel for the same or even cheaper than mainland wholesale prices, it would create a few jobs for some that are being lost right now, win win all round, all partners are effectively volunteers so no profiteering. Just an idea
MuckleJoannie
The pumps in Skerries are owned by a community group. There was an attempt to set up something similar in Scalloway a few years ago but there was a lack of interest. Maybe it is time to look at it again. sheltie53
There are many questions relating to the high cost of fuel in Shetland, questions that are asked again and again and again. When will we see justification for this, I assume "others" are active on Shetlink so how about it? WHY IS FUEL SO EXPENSIVE IN SHETLAND
